About This Cause
What do we want people to know about our organization? Since 1988, Fern Creek/Highview United Ministries (FCHUM) has faithfully and effectively functioned in uniting the community (church, civic, and corporate) in serving the community. Founded by 11 supporting congregations as a 501 (c) 3 charitable, not-for-profit organization, FCHUM is now supported in part by 24 congregations representing 11 denominations, as well as numerous civic and corporate community partners. Through the decades, FCHUM has united the community (church, civic, and corporate) in fighting hunger, preventing homelessness, caring for the elderly, and stabilizing lives. Beginning with a simple food pantry and minimal financial assistance, FCHUM now operates several programs that efficiently and cost effectively help neighbors in need. The Individual & Family Assistance Center (IFAC), operating Monday – Friday from 10:00 -1:30, now serves well over 1,200 families monthly, distributing over 30,000 pounds of food, and over $20,000 in financial assistance, while leveraging an additional $60,000-$80,000 in utilities assistance through participation in the Association of Community Ministries. Generally IFAC annually distributes 500-700 backpacks filled with school supplies, hundreds of Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, and provides Christmas gifts for 800-1,000 children. This program’s efforts are limited to the 40218, 40228 and 40291 zip code areas. In partnership with the Louisville Metro Nutrition Office, FCHUM staff and volunteers deliver over 3,000 nutritious lunches accompanied by a friendly, compassionate daily visit to homebound older adults. That is all a part of the Meals On Wheels (MOW) program. This program’s geographic area of service is determined by the Louisville Metro Nutrition, but is generally reserved to the general Fern Creek and Highview areas. Through the efforts of the Adult Day Health Center (ADC) our staff and volunteers provide 23,000 to 24,000 hours of activities and personal care, over 2,000 hours of nursing services, 1,400-1,500 breakfasts, and 2,500-2,800 lunches to frail older adult enabling them to stay in their own homes or with family, relieve caregiver stress, and help many caregivers remain in the work force. There are no geographic limits to this program serving greater Louisville Jefferson County Metro area and surrounding counties.
