Mission Statement
Americana Community Center's mission is to provide holistic services to Louisville's refugee, immigrant and underserved population to build strong and healthy families, create a safe and supportive community and help every individual realize their potential.
About This Cause
Services began in 1993 in response to the growing international population in Louisville. Americana was originally housed in four apartment units, where many of the refugee, immigrant, and low-income families of Louisville were living. Over the years of listening to our international neighbors and identifying what they needed in order to succeed, Americana’s community-based programs were born. In 2002, with the support of local foundations, we purchased a former school building of 50,000 square feet. All programs and services were moved to the new location, and Americana was able to serve a greater number of our neighbors. Americana has been Louisville’s primary resource for post-resettlement refugees, immigrants, and underserved populations for more than 25 years. Most often, immigrants and refugees arrive with interrupted education and financial hardship. Without a social network and holistic services, these challenges make it difficult for this population to move beyond "just surviving". Many of these participants, both young and old, come from traumatic backgrounds with little to no English. Every human being requires nutritious food, physical and mental health care, education, financial security, and a sense of community to realize their individual potential. This concurrent and overlapping approach built for individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach is the outcome of 25 years of service, evaluation, and listening. Communication with participants leads to individually tailored programs that reflect each family’s needs and goals. Our programs include out-of-school time Youth Programming, Family Education, Family Coaching, Adult Education Classes, Workforce Development, Mental Health Services, Fiberworks, COVID-19 crisis management, and a seasonal Community Garden. We bridge the gap from surviving to thriving for more than 5,000 people from over 100 countries in their pursuits of better days and brighter futures.
