Mission Statement
Bluegrass Greensource works to empower the citizens of Central Kentucky to create a sustainable environment by encouraging small steps that can make a big impact toward a greener future for our communities. Since 2001, we have provided outreach to schools, community groups, businesses, local governments, and citizens throughout the region. About This Cause
Organization History Bluegrass Greensource (BGGS) is a nonprofit organization that provides education and resources that empower communities and individuals to increase sustainability and make a positive impact on our local environment. Since 2001, we have provided outreach to schools, community groups, business, local government and citizens in 20 Central Kentucky counties. When first created, BGGS awarded small grants to assist communities achieve sustainability goals. Over time, BGGS shifted its approach to address a gap in quality environmental education available to youth and adults. BGGS no longer provides grants, though we continue to increase the numbers of people that we engage with. Last year, we had 89,678 contacts throughout our 20 county service area, and our educators worked in 3,700 classrooms. One aspect of our work that has not changed over the years is a commitment to meeting individuals, organizations, and communities where they are in order to provide pathways to greater sustainability. In practical terms this means that we believe that there are steps that everyone can take to change their behavior and become more sustainable. Organization Description Bluegrass Greensource is a 501(c)3 organization operating in 20 Central Kentucky counties. Environmental Education staff and Outreach Specialists cater to both youth and adult populations. Environmental Educators provide standards- and science-based programming that complements the lessons and activities Kentucky teachers conduct on a day-to-day basis. Our Educators are available for in-class instruction, after school or extracurricular programming, camps, community events, and early childhood/pre-school through high school instruction. Our Outreach Specialists work with adults to provide resources and education on waste reduction, recycling, energy conservation, and water quality. They conduct environmental trainings, workshops, and organize community events throughout our 20-county service area. One of our Outreach Specialist works directly with businesses in Fayette County, one Specialist manages a water quality program along sensitive watersheds, and one Specialist organizes general outreach events, including energy efficiency workshops, recycling outreach to multi-family housing communities, and general water quality education. Last year alone, Greensource staff had 89,678 interactions with students and adults, including working directly in 3,700 classrooms. Organization Purpose Bluegrass Greensource exists to empower individuals, organizations, and communities in order to collectively create a more sustainable environment. We empower people by providing whatever tools and resources are needed to achieve whatever goals the person or group we are working with has. When it comes to topics of sustainability, there are quite a few competing and conflicting messages out there, and our purpose is to help people make sense of this context, navigate the appropriate pathways, and find a direction that works for them.
