Mission Statement
The Neighborhood provides a safe, secure, clean, and convenient one-stop center for those in need of assistance in the region of and around Northeastern Kentucky. Part of the mission’s goal is to increase the employability and reduce the risk of homelessness for families in the region. With multiple nonprofits located together in a common location, The Neighborhood can facilitate access to services and help meet the needs of families served. The Neighborhood routinely serves hundreds of people daily. We work from a philosophy of STABILITY (providing stabilizing services like food, housing, and clothing), OPPORTUNITY (providing employment, education, and edification options to stabilized individuals), and ACCOUNTABILITY (providing friendship, counseling, and mentorship to stabilized people so that they are in a position to utilize the opportunities provided). The Neighborhood is a BETTERMENT program, meaning that if someone comes to us, they will leave in a better position. We see no real benefit in keeping people in persistent poverty, and using charitable services to create dependency. We truly are NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS and we believe that we are BETTER TOGETHER! Services provided at The Neighborhood include: Food distribution to area food pantries Emergency food Utility assistance Help with birth certificates and ID cards Health care referrals Prescription medication assistance Case/care management Household goods Free clothing and miscellaneous items Hot, nutritious meals 5 days a week Showers, hair cuts and mailboxes
About This Cause
The Neighborhood in Ashland, KY provides a betterment program that consists of collaboration between charities, businesses, programs, and government sectors attacking poverty from a framework consisting of stability measures, opportunity avenues, and accountability partners. We supply someone in need with basic necessities to get on their feet, offerings of educational and employment endeavors, and the social capital to help them make it through and know they are not alone in their fight. We do this through the cooperation and collaboration of independent organizations who streamline and coordinate their services to efficiently and effectively make success possible. In Ashland, we have a facility, similar to a mall, that has the centralized intake, the community resources, and communication hub for all the different organizations with which we work. It is the administrative location of The Neighborhood, and sees between 50 and 60 clients per day. We serve, on average 150 meals per day, and have provided housing counseling and services, hygiene and haircuts, clothing, bicycles, and employment for over 16,000 people in our region to date. However, we always desire to do more. We have recently embarked on a textile recycling initiative that takes care of local textile waste while employing people with difficult backgrounds, including people who are post-incarcerated and those just out of recovery. We also have an agricultural compound that trains individuals in farming, aquaponics, honey cultivation, and culinary sciences. Finally, we have a makerspace for people interested in artistic endeavors that includes a sewing lab, 3D printing lab, a beadwork lab, a painting lab, and a laser engraver. People employed here can create our locally sold items or create their own works, and we provide a sales outlet for them to make a profit. If they want to pursue a career as an entrepreneur, we can assist them in writing their business plan, getting a business loan, or setting up online sales. The Neighborhood provides soft skill training and mentorship opportunities to individuals coming through our programming, as well as educational scholarships to our local community college (Ashland Community and Technical College).
