Mission Statement
The Lazy Pig Animal Sanctuary is a small sanctuary dedicated to providing the best possible life for the animals who join our family. We have dogs, cats, goats, sheep, small birds, rabbits and, of course, potbelly pigs. Each animal is treated with love, compassion and respect and provided with the best possible food and habitat. We commit to them for their lifetime and provide any needed medical attention. No healthy animal is ever put down. Our home and the sanctuary are one and the same. We live with the animals, we sleep with the animals, we love the animals. There is no breeding at our sanctuary. When animals come to live with us they are spayed or neutered. We do not contribute to animal overpopulation. Because we are small, we are not able to take in a large number of animals. Therefore, we make every attempt to help people either resolve their issues with an unwanted pet or help them find another home.
About This Cause
THE LAZY PIG PHILOSOPHY We do not take in any animal we are not ready to care for the length of its life. We are a sanctuary and not a shelter. This means we keep the animals. Of course, there are a few animals here who are adoptable but we generally refer people to our local shelter. City shelters generally have fairly low adoption rates which is very sad for the dogs and cats who are killed simply because no one wants them. Many people are not at all interested in spaying and neutering their pets. They adopt on a whim and it is common for dogs to be chained up for their entire lives. The excuses to not spay and neuter are endless. "They won't be protective." "She'll get fat." "We want the kids to see the miracle of birth." All the excuses are untrue and create more animals than can be adopted. We believe every animal deserves a loving, caring home where they are provided with high quality food, fresh water, a healthy environment and enough attention. We feed our dogs and cats organic, human quality pet foods from a local establishment. The food is more expensive than traditional super market or Wal Mart pet foods but we save a lot of money on vet bills because our animals get exceptional nutrition. This is key to having a dog or cat. Good food means a little more expenditure in the short run but a huge savings over a pets' lifetime. The barnies (what we call the animals in the barnyard) are given non-organic food only because organic food for farm animals is unavailable in our area. The dogs and cats don’t have any real rules. Cats are allowed on the kitchen counters and the table and the dogs sleep on the furniture. We don’t mind sharing with them and feel it is important the cats can get up on something high if one or more of the dogs are frisky and in a cat chasing mood. Generally, we believe it is important to treat the animals with respect and affection. Because they are rescues we do have some animals with quirky behaviors and bad habits. We accommodate their personalities and their behavior to the point of seeming a bit odd. We don't judge people who do not allow their cats and dogs free range of furniture and kitchen counters it is just how we do it here at The Lazy Pig. We are largely self funded. It costs about $500 per month just to feed everyone. As stated previously, we do not have a lot of vet bills because the animals are provided with high quality food and a healthy environment but occasionally there are vet bills. We always have dream projects in mind but do not have the funds to make them a reality. We would love to provide the cats with ceiling height runs and hidey holes as well as more places to lounge up high in the sun and play. We would love to build larger runs for our bunnies (they currently have 9 x 8 secure outside space around their hutches). The piggies could use new houses and larger pens. Any help is greatly appreciated and goes directly to the animals. The Lazy Pig Animal Sanctuary has no overhead. There is no paid staff. We all choose to take care of the animals and they live in our home. Funding received is not going to an office staff, web designers or gigantic mailings. We are a small volunteer run organization. Every cent donated goes to help provide food, housing and medical care for the animals. We provide virtual adoptions for anyone who is interested. For a small fee you can virtually adopt any animal who resides here. You will receive information about your virtual pet including photos. Your virtual pet will contact you monthly and will remember your birthday, anniversary and any holidays you choose. Take your pick! Want a pig but live in a city apartment? You can have one. Contact us for more information if you are interested. Virtual adoption makes an excellent gift too.
