About This Cause

Hawley-Green has become a model neighborhood in Syracuse, NY. It is part of the north side of Syracuse, which had a lot of crime in the 1970s through 1990s. We have been instrumental in improving the neighborhood and forming an organization that has greatly reduced the crime. Beyond that, we have created a neighborhood where people say hello and know each other. Here are some of our activities: 1) Made 1058 omelets at 20+ free community brunches. 2) 10 years of community gardening. These include over 80 garden members through the years who are senior citizens, physically and mentally challenged individuals, newly arrived refugees, families and children, rich and poor, young and old. 3) Appreciation picnics (13) where we thank city workers and officials, and civic and private organizations who have helped us with projects during the years, Over 200 people attend this picnic yearly. 4) 8 House Tours that show historic housing in the neighborhood. 5) Community projects that include painting a poor persons house, soup nights, clothing drives, plant shares, Halloween parades, pet parades, opera nights, luaus and so much more. Come on down! 6) Planting of 64 trees with 36 more to come. 7) Planting of gardens for new neighbors. 8) Welcome packets to each new neighbor with information that will help them know where things are in the hood. 9) Creation of a community flower garden that all can share. 10) Holiday caroling in December. Wonderful experiences to see people's joy as we sing. 11) With the help of students from Syracuse University, creation of community website to give neighbors and those interested information about the neighborhood and upcoming events. See www.hawleygreenneighbors.org. 12) Maintenance of a "Little Free Library" where folks can come and share books. 13) Neighborhood projects such as re-building of community playground with Home Depot , the City Parks Department, and Kaboom, Inc. 14) Creation and installation of a large "Welcome to Hawley-Green" sign. 15) Installation of over 20 banners marking the area. 16) Help with installation of security cameras in the neighborhood. 17) Community beautification projects that include planting and weeding neighborhood gardens and planting corner planter barrels yearly. 18) Monthly neighborhood watch meetings with NEHDA where neighbors can meet police and each other to discuss issues relevant to safety and improvement. 19) Grant writing activities to improve the neighborhood. As you can see, we are busy. We are also lucky that we have 3 senior homes and are 1 mile from Syracuse University. This supplies us with rich resource of knowledge from the seniors, and boundless energy from our student neighbors. We are so lucky. Come visit some time! The organization is a 501(c)(3) run by a Board of Directors of 6 members. Membership is 157 neighbors. Territory is located in the north portion of Syracuse, bordered by Lodi, Thompson, Burnet and James Streets.
