Mission Statement

Sound Theatre Company’s mission is to empower artists to give voice to the dignity and diversity of the human experience--moving audiences toward a more just and compassionate world. By supporting the artists we work with, we will create more engaging, authentic, and impactful productions. We envision a world that joyfully nurtures the creation of transformative theatre experiences and celebrates the open, honest, and truthful exchange of diverse and inclusive voices. Today, Sound Theatre Company's core work includes: -Producing stories by underrepresented theatre artists -Developing new work by intersectional BIPOC and disabled artists -Increasing access to theatre and transformative storytelling for artists, administrators, and audiences

About This Cause

Sound Theatre Company was launched in 2006 by Founding Artistic Director Teresa Thuman with a site-specific production of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" presented in and around Lake Sammamish in Redmond, WA. Within a decade, Sound Theatre had become known for engaging emerging artists and producing challenging work. Buoyed by a growing audience, a strong collective of connected artists, and years of racial justice conversations, in 2015, Sound Theatre refocused its mission to empower artists. We adopted a co-production model to support under-resourced theatres of color by sharing production opportunities, infrastructure, and marketing resources while providing full creative agency. Sound Theatre also began to deepen its focus on disability. Sound Theatre continues this work today in Seattle as a disabled and Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC)-led theatre, producing authentic stories by underrepresented voices with an increasing focus on developing new works by emerging and established BIPOC and Deaf/disabled playwrights. By eliminating traditional physical, cultural, and economic barriers for both artists and audiences, we seek to provide a platform for untold stories, forgotten histories and alternative futures.
