About This Cause

Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders is currently responsible for seven programs or projects: 1) The LLCC BBS is a long-term bird banding station at LLCC. Trained volunteers operate the station most Monday through Saturday mornings during the spring and fall migration seasons. LLCC provides the banding site and support services. 2) MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) is a collaborative, continent-wide effort to study the status of breeding birds and to assist with the conservation of birds and their habitats. The program is managed by the Institute of Bird Populations of Point Reyes, California. 3) MMN (Midwest Migration Network) is a regional consortium of researchers. A focal point of research is monitoring migratory patterns of Midwest birds. LLABB sponsors a MMN banding station at the Jubilee Farm near Springfield (a property owned by the Dominican Sisters). Trained volunteers operate the station one day a week during the spring and fall migration seasons. 4) Illinois Hummingbird Festivals are unique public or private events where large groups of people gather to observe the licensed capture and banding of these tiny birds and are held throughout the state. After the birds have been banded and processed, members of the public are given the opportunity to release the birds back to the wild. LLABB sponsors at least 15 festivals and dozens of private events throughout Illinois annually. 5) The American Kestrel Project currently monitors a series of nest boxes in eastern St. Clair County. Typically, 20 nest boxes are monitored and 30-50 young are banded by volunteers each year. 6) The Saw-whet Owl Project is geared towards the nocturnal capture of Saw-whet Owls during their brief passage through the Springfield area in late October and early November. 7) The educational programs and opportunities include bird identification classes, bird banding demonstrations (including the “Be A Bander” program), participation in local environmental events, hands-on-children’s activities, and other programs.
