About This Cause

Bring Impact Globally With A Very Energetic Smile Most of us grieve deeply when we lose someone close to us. The people who were lucky to know Vaughn Bigelow Jr. will forever grieve because he was taken from us much too young. No one should ever endure the bereavement and pain that we have felt after losing a child in an act of criminal violence. Big Waves Inc. was created in the memory of Vaughn Bigelow Jr. by Vaughn Sr. and Meghan Bigelow. The vision of Big Waves is to impact safety and education around mental health and gun violence in such a meaningful way that it has a measured impact on the reduction of injuries and deaths caused by gun accidents and gun violence. Vaughn Jr. had a contagious smile. It will never be forgotten, but we will always feel a pain in our hearts when we wonder what more he could have given to our community. On June 14, 2018, Meghan Bigelow and her three boys were enjoying a beautiful Colorado summer day of running errands, taking golf lessons, and going to the dentist. Vaughn Jr. was thirteen years old when he became the victim of a violent crime on that day. Vaughn was riding in the car with his mother and two younger brothers when a road rage encounter escalated to violence. Another driver followed their car into the parking lot of their pediatric dentist. When Vaughn, his mom, and his two brothers exited from their car, the other driver confronted them in an aggressive manner. That driver then returned to his car, retrieved his gun, and began to open fire on Vaughn and his family. He shot Vaughn, his 7-year-old brother, Meghan, and another witness to the crime. He left all of them for dead and fled. The middle brother was able to escape and find help. Thanks to the heroic efforts of many first responders and medical experts, Meghan, Vaughn’s youngest brother and the other wounded witness all survived their near-fatal injuries. Vaughn’s life was taken. Our family and community were forever changed that day. Our lives will never be the same. Call to Action - #lockyourgun #rippleofpositivitity We hear the word ‘change’ a lot these days. We want others to change, to do better, to make better choices. But we all know real change starts in one place - in each of us as individuals. It seems so simple, and yet how many times a day do you find yourself getting frustrated or angry at someone or something that, in the big picture, just doesn’t matter? We all have a duty to make better choices each day to make this world a better place to live. Too often we go on autopilot and react harshly, negatively, and with anger when what we need to do is pause, take a breath, and choose to make a different response. Share a smile or a wave. Make eye contact with people. Send the text or make the call to the person who has been on your mind. Reach out and make the connection. If you feel like helping, do the thing you’re being called to do because chances are, whoever it is that you want to help won’t ask for it. You, me, we are how this world is going to work to pick up its shattered and scattered pieces and put them back together. The pieces might not go back in the same order or place, as some have been damaged or even lost, but we have to do the work nonetheless. Our hope at Big Waves is that you will make the choice every day to create your own ripple of positivity, and by making that choice, you will change the world, one locked gun at a time.
