Mission Statement
For The Gworls is a Black, transgender-led, fiscally-sponsored collective whose goal is to ensure that Black transgender people have secure housing and can access, afford, and maintain safe, gender-affirming healthcare. We center the needs of Black transgender people because antiblackness and transphobia make it so that Black transgender people — especially Black transgender women and femmes — are disproportionately more likely to be unemployed, homeless, and more likely to be unable to access healthcare that would lead to safe, gender-affirming care.
About This Cause
Our work is largely categorized into two sections: Fund A: Rent and Gender-Affirming Assistance for Black Transgender People and Fund B: Emergency Relief Medical Fund that provides Travel and Co-Pay Assistance for Black Transgender People. We started Fund A in July 4th 2019, and it involves crowdfunding on behalf of Black transgender people to help them pay for their rent and gender-affirming healthcare. We started our party collective as a response to homelessness that Black transgender people were facing in New York. Specifically, two Black transgender people that founder, Asanni Armon, knew were facing eviction, so Asanni decided to host a rooftop event where ticket sales went to assisting those two individuals. After a successful event, Asanni decided to formally create the organization and start fundraising monthly to assist with rent. The collective soon thereafter expanded to helping Black transgender people with affirmative medical care, as well. In the wake of COVID-19 and the current recession, this work is especially important, considering that many Black transgender people are being laid off from work, which is only exacerbating the already terrible conditions that Black transgender people generally live in. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we also launched our Emergency Medical Relief Medical Fund (Fund B) in 2020, which allows us to pay for Black trans folks to travel to clinics and pharmacies during this time, as well as provide co-pay assistance if needed, so that they can continue to receive important prescriptions. We send these funds directly to recipients so that they can transport themselves via a rideshare service to and from wherever they access their medicines.
