Mission Statement

Kentucky Opera's mission is to enrich and engage our community through spectacular music, creative storytelling and the thrill of the human voice.

About This Cause

Kentucky Opera has been a pillar of the arts and culture community in Louisville and Kentucky since its founding in 1952. Kentucky Opera's productions, programs, & events serve people of all ages throughout Kentucky & Southern Indiana in PreK-12 schools, colleges, universities, & community centers. Every year, Kentucky Opera works with organizations like Brown-Forman, Louisville Orchestra, Jefferson County Public Schools, the Kentucky Center, WUOL, and others to make the arts available to youth, families, and adults across the Commonwealth of Kentucky through performances of full-length operas and programs for students and communities. In the 2020/21 season, Kentucky Opera will also collaborate with Louisville Ballet for our production of Orfeo ed Euridice, and our related community programs. Kentucky Opera offers a robust, exciting season with innovative education & engagement programs, delivering meaningful, entertaining, accessible, & affordable arts experiences & continues to cultivate future generations to benefit from the art form. Historically, these programs have included a variety of programs address needs & interests common to Kentuckians, including Oh Freedom!, The Science of Opera, the Library Lecture Series, Opera Bound, student dress rehearsals, composer workshops, & performances at local festivals & community events open to the public that. Kentucky Opera presents rare works from master composers in new & modern operas that provoke the audience’s imagination & artistic vision. These productions promote the necessity of opera in Kentucky. Kentucky Opera's passion is to reach beyond traditional boundaries, be a regional leader in artistic quality, & a national leader in training emerging young artists. In the 2018/19 season, Kentucky Opera served 26,754 people with 106 opportunities. Kentucky Opera will continue to showcase new operatic works & expand repertory & production design in new, exciting directions. Kentucky Opera also plays a role in supporting the work of other organizations. As part of our restructuring, Kentucky Opera has moved away from a transactional model of organizational partnerships to one centered on mutual benefit. In this model, Kentucky Opera and local organizations both participate in the development of an event and share responsibilities toward the common goal of highlighting each other's work and addressing local needs. These partnerships include Awakenings: arts-centered community conversations that challenge tradition, question social narratives and invite varied perspectives. Panel discussions explore guiding questions about the impact of art and opera and the potential of art and opera to strengthen communities. We highlight our community partners, which have included the Louisville Vet Center, Kentucky Shakespeare with Veterans, Free2Hope, the Center for Rural Development, Urban League, and the Kentucky Office of Victims Advocacy and how their work relates to the opera. By choosing community partners whose mission and capacity can help address a particular social need, Kentucky Opera can include more of our community member in the conversation and broaden our reach to new audiences.
