MEMPHIS MUSEUMS INC
Mission Statement
The Pink Palace Museum’s mission is to inspire visitors to discover human cultures, the natural world, technology and the universe. Through rich collections, dynamic exhibits and engaging programs, we encourage our diverse community to reflect on the past, understand the present and influence the future.
About This Cause
The Pink Palace Family of Museums is home to the Museum itself, Lichterman Nature Center, Coon Creek Science Center, and two historic properties, the Mallory-Neely House and the Magevney House. At the Pink Palace, facilities include the AutoZone Dome at Sharpe Planetarium, the CTI 3D Theater, and permanent and traveling exhibits housed in 65,000 total sf of exhibit space. Students are a major visitor base at the Pink Palace, and students attending Title 1 schools are a priority because we believe strongly in providing cultural access to all, regardless of ability to pay. For students attending Title 1 schools (defined as a school with a student enrollment in which more than half of the students are low-income), we offer no-cost admission to the Museum, Planetarium and Lichterman. Exhibits are designed to complement school curriculums and offer opportunities for the public to learn about our region’s cultural and natural history. Exhibits are also the springboard for the Education Department to offer in-museum and in-school programs for school groups and public audiences. Programs include laboratory and classroom experiences on STEM and social studies topics, available for as many as 100 students per class, and exhibit interpretation by museum instructors. Themed science nights are also offered, and the Museum’s outreach program to schools, called Suitcases and Passports, offers curriculum-supported activities in STEM and social studies topics. Programs are also offered at Lichterman Nature Center, emphasizing our role as stewards of the Earth and our relationship with the flora/fauna around us. Local history programs are offered at the historic properties. All programs encourage discovery through hands-on, object-based learning.
