Mission Statement
Progress promotes health, happiness, and safety for people with disabilities and senior adults needing care. We provide staff supports to bridge the gap between limited independence and the realization of the best possible life.
About This Cause
Founded in 1971, Progress is a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization that has set the standard for how best to help Middle Tennesseans with disabilities live safely, productively, and as independently as possible. Located in Nashville, Progress serves people with varying disabilities (intellectual, developmental, physical, and age-related disabilities such as dementia and Alzheimer’s) throughout Davidson, Cheatham, Robertson, Sumner, Wilson, Rutherford, and Williamson counties. Initially focusing on adults with intellectual disabilities, in 2009 the organization broadened its focus, utilizing its expertise for a rapidly growing number of seniors in need of the services Progress provides. Today, Progress offers comprehensive services including in-home care, transportation, respite, community-based day services, and a wide array of employment services for people with disabilities. Specifically, Progress offers a Ticket to Work Employment Network, which provides employment training and placement, Project Search internships programs enabling interns to be job-ready at the completion of the program, and “Employment and Community First Choices” program, which help people learn new skills, explore the possibility of working and support them in gaining as much freedom as possible. Progress serves approximately 300 people annually. For most of our people with disabilities, Progress provides services to them 24 hours every day that frequently includes live-in companions who prepare meals, house clean, and provide transportation. Having additional service providers during the day such as an employment coach is also common. Many clients receive duplicate services from Progress. Progress differs from other organizations in the area in that the services provided are more comprehensive. Not only does Progress offer a Senior Services Program in addition to programs for people with disabilities, but the employment services offered by Progress include 2 Project Search groups (both a student model as well as an adult model) and the Ticket to Work Employment Network, which is unique among agencies serving people with disabilities in Middle Tennessee. Progress is the only agency in Middle Tennessee (that we are aware of) that has its own Employment Center. We are also proud to have earned in 2021, a 4-year accreditation in Person-Centered Excellence from the Council on Quality and Leadership. Through the programs that we provide, we help identify the strengths of the people we support, as well as their interests and help them learn additional skills so that they can share these strengths and build relationships throughout the community and to maximize their ability to live as independently as possible with the focus always being on the person supported and how they might best excel.
