Mission Statement
The mission of Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center is provide quality healthcare, health education and to promote wellness.
About This Cause
Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center provides healthcare services to families and individuals regardless of their ability to pay. Patients with little or no insurance can receive services based on a sliding fee scale. MWCHC provides obstetrics/gynecology, pediatric, geriatric, family and internal medicine, radiology, pharmacy and laboratory services as well as preventive and restorative dental care and behavioral/mental health services, nutritional counseling, and social services. A suboxone clinic is available to treat opioid addiction, and a Second Harvest certified food pantry is available for those who have nutritional challenges ensuring that fresh fruits and vegetables are available for those in need. We also provide COVID testing and administer vaccinations. We promote wellness by ensuring all have access to preventive services (immunizations, cancer screenings, well-child visits, smoking cessation, HIV screenings). Health insurance enrollment assistance is available, and we collaborate with nearby colleges and universities to help educate future medical/dental/behavior health professionals by providing training, internships and residency programs. Last year over 200 healthcare students received training at our facilities. A partnership with St. Thomas Health Ascension and University of Tennessee Health Services supports an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program providing advanced training for dentists. With the addition of approximately six dentists annually through this program, we are able to treat hundreds more dental patients then we would without the program. MWCHC with funding from Bank of America provides educational programs that teach individuals healthcare training in customer service. This paid training program prepares individuals for healthcare jobs in all types of healthcare settings. Our mobile health unit HOWE (Healthcare on Wheels for Everyone) allows us to go into remote areas where medical care is not easily accessible to provide much needed services. HOWE is also available for community events such as neighborhood outings, back-to-school gatherings, and places that feed the homeless providing health services to large groups of people at one time. One of our newest collaborations focuses on reducing high blood pressure in North Nashville. This pilot program in collaboration with Nashville Health, The Nashville Food Project and other health organization is designed to provide the necessary support that individuals need to regulate their blood pressure. The goal is to make this a city-wide program in the future. One of the unique MWCHC offerings is our older adult educational/recreational programming SALT, Seasoned Adults Living Triumphantly. We host classes that address issues of concern for senior citizens. This program provides a gathering space where older adults socialize with others, keeping them active and engaged in the community and warding off isolation and loneliness. We also sponsor programming such as the Senior Expo that showcases various community organizations that provide services to older people, and the Red & White Affair which is a very popular day party for those ages 60 and older to celebrate Valentine's Day. For the past several years, corporate and foundation sponsors provided SALT members $100 each to go holiday shopping for their friends and family, something that many seniors would not be able to do on fixed incomes. Volunteers helped the older adults with their shopping, making suggestions and reaching items on high shelves. All were treated to a festive holiday meal afterwards. A Secret Santa sponsored by MWCHC Staff and community support made sure that each SALT member received gifts of their own after the joyous celebration.
