About This Cause

The Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre is a nationally known nonprofit professional theater that produces contemporary musicals and plays, reinvents classic musicals, develops new work, and reaches its community through engaging educational and outreach opportunities. Signature is widely recognized as the premiere venue in Washington to see musical theater, especially new musicals. Recently recognized as the favorite D.C. theater of The Washington Post and called “the hottest company in (and around) D.C. by the Chief Theater Critic Peter Marks, Signature is renowned for its interpretations of Stephen Sondheim’s work, inventive adaptations of overlooked or forgotten musicals, and investment in fresh new projects. The Theatre is an industry leader in developing and producing new work and is home to the largest musical theater development program in the United States. In 2009, Signature received the Regional Theatre Tony Award® in recognition for artistic excellence. Signature features the finest talent from the D.C. metropolitan area and New York on its stages and has been a creative home to such luminaries as Chita Rivera, Sheryl Crow, Barry Levinson, George Hearn, Kathleen Marshall, Ann Reinking, James Lapine, John Kander and Fred Ebb, Cameron Mackintosh, Terrence McNally, and the company’s signature composer, Stephen Sondheim. Signature draws more than 100,000 patrons annually to its Arlington home and has been cited for its achievements by a wide range of local and national media. Each year, Signature presents more than 800 performances, education programs, and artistic events, including an eight-show subscription season, a popular Cabaret series and complementary discussion nights, artist Q&A events, seminars, workshops and readings. The Theatre’s SigWorks new work development programming highlights readings and workshops of new plays and musicals, and includes the SigWorks: New Play Reading Series and the SigWorks New Musical Theatre Lab. Signature gives back to the community through education and outreach initiatives that engage the area's increasingly diverse population. Ongoing programs include: Signature in the Schools, a comprehensive arts education program for high school students; Education Residencies for high school and middle school students in two dozen schools throughout the Washington, DC region; Overtures and Stage One musical theater training for emerging artists and teens; and a free, monthly Inside Signature discussion and interview series.
