Mission Statement
Safe Haven has over 30 years of experience in the changing field of family homelessness with proactive programs, evidence based practices and trauma informed care. We increasingly play a leadership role in education and advocacy to address this community-wide issue. Safe Haven is the only shelter-to-housing program of its kind in Middle Tennessee that accepts the entire homeless family. Our mission is “to empower Middle Tennessee homeless families with children to achieve lasting self-sufficiency.” Safe Haven helps families experiencing homelessness by providing for their immediate needs of shelter and stability. We operate through effective and results-driven programs, integrating services that are evidence-based. Our housing first model, coupled with wrap around services is designed to give families the necessary tools to depart the program with stable employment and secured housing.
About This Cause
Safe Haven Family Shelter (SHFS) remains the only comprehensive shelter-to-independent and permanent housing program in Middle Tennessee that accommodates homeless families (single and two-parent families) with children. Through our Shelter Program, SHFS keeps families together while providing an environment for them to achieve success in long-term independence. Through our Shelter Program, Transitional and Re-Housing programs, we can accommodate over 55 families at a time. Families entering SHFS are enrolled in our Shelter Program for full evaluation and to provide customized services. Families receive intensive case management and can engage in additional services that include: workforce development, financial coaching, individual/ group therapy sessions for parents/children, nutrition education/wellness activities, and a vast array of children’s programs and educational services through our initiative focused on the academic and emotional/social stability. SHFS also obtains a robust housing program that has supported our expansion by developing relationships with landlords and property owners to insuring that clients with housing barriers can overcome these obstacles to stability and independence. With our expanded capacity, we now serve over 75 families annually. Families typically stay in residence at the shelter between 45-90 days and our Transitional and Re-Housing programs vary depending on need and available resources. While at the shelter, families work on a housing and employment plan and choose from a wide variety of activities and classes, and counseling interventions while they work on goals. In Transitional and Re-housing, families continue to work on financial and personal goals while working toward reducing debt, getting a better job, and working through transportation and child care barriers.
