Mission Statement
Tuskegee University’s central mission is to advance knowledge, leadership and service through our teaching, research and outreach programs. Emanating from our proud heritage as a historically black institution, a land-grant university, and a state-related educational unit, we encourage students to not just pursue careers but to be of service to society and to remain active lifelong learners. We endeavor to create a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters personal integrity, an appreciation of diverse cultures and perspectives, and a commitment to improving the human condition. Tuskegee University will remain a top-ranked university known for its rigor and excellence in academic, teaching and research innovation. We will continue to strive for excellence by adhering to the overriding philosophy of our founding principal, Booker T. Washington — which called for doing common things in an uncommon way — as we advance the interests of our community, state, nation, and partners around the world. Through these partnerships — and our unique combination of the humanities, professional and STEM disciplines — we will prepare students to be successful leaders and societal change agents in their chosen careers and in the communities where they live and serve.
About This Cause
Tuskegee University is an independent and state-related institution of higher education. Its programs serve a student body that is coeducational as well as racially, ethnically and religiously diverse. With a strong orientation toward disciplines which highlight the relationship between education and work force preparation in the sciences, professions and technical areas, Tuskegee University also emphasizes the importance of the liberal arts as a foundation for successful careers in all areas. Accordingly, all academic majors stress the mastery of a required core of liberal arts courses. Tuskegee University is located in Tuskegee, Alabama, which is 40 miles east of the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, Alabama, and 20 miles west of the city of Auburn, Alabama. It is also within easy driving distance to the cities of Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. The academic programs are organized into five colleges and three schools: (1) the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences; (2) the College of Arts and Sciences; (3) the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science; (4) the College of Engineering; (5) the College of Veterinary Medicine; (6) the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science; (7) the School of Education; and (8) the School of Nursing and Allied Health. The curricula for these colleges and schools currently offer over 50 degrees including 39 Bachelor's, 13 Master's, 2 Doctor's of Philosophy: one in Materials Science and Engineering, and one in Integrative BioSciences, and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Instruction • We focus on education as a continuing process and lifelong endeavor for all people. We provide a high quality core experience in the liberal arts. • We develop superior technical, scientific, and professional education with a career orientation. • We stress the relationship between education and employment, between what students learn and the changing needs of a global workforce. Research • We preserve, refine, and develop further the bodies of knowledge already discovered. We discover new knowledge for the continued growth of individuals and society and for the enrichment of the University's instructional and service programs. • We develop applications of knowledge to help resolve problems of modern society. Service • We serve the global society as well as the regional and campus community and beyond through the development of outreach programs that are compatible with the University's educational mission, that improve understanding of community problems, and that help develop relevant alternative solutions. • We engage in outreach activities to assist in the development of communities as learning societies.
