Mission Statement
Mobile Baykeeper exists to defend and revive the waters of Coastal Alabama.
About This Cause
We exist to advocate for the Mobile Bay Watershed and Coastal Alabama, protecting clean water, clean air, and healthy communities. The Mobile Bay Watershed encompasses 65% of the land area for the state of Alabama, including parts of Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee. It is a vast network of over 250 separate waterways, including rivers, bays, creeks, bayous, lakes, cutoffs, branches, and sloughs. It includes the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the continent, known as “North America’s Amazon.” Mobile Bay opens into the Gulf of Mexico, whose sugar sand beaches attract thousands of tourists every year. A healthy watershed ensures a growing and vibrant community, a high quality of life, and a resilient economy. Mobile Baykeeper exists to protect it. We solve pollution problems. We research environmental issues across our watershed that impact public health and our quality of life. We build relationships with elected officials and business, industry, and agency leaders, knowing that without their engagement we cannot grow responsibly. We educate our fellow citizens about our waterways and the impacts every individual has on our natural resources. Our broad and diverse member base is invested in preserving the Mobile Bay Watershed and our coastal communities for future generations. We are vigilant protectors of our watershed, committed to accuracy in all we do. In every community member we see someone who needs, deserves, and could invest in a clean Mobile Bay Watershed and healthy coastal communities. We view industry, corporations, utilities, and other permit holders not as polluters, but as potential collaborators for solutions. We are direct, honest, and cooperative, knowing that we all have at least one thing in common: a dependence on clean water.
