Mission Statement
Founded in 1989, the Literacy Coalition serves as the leading advocate for literacy in Palm Beach County. Our mission is to improve the quality of life in our community by promoting and achieving literacy.
About This Cause
Principal Services Budding Readers supports emergent literacy skill development by providing Reading Partners to read and discuss books weekly with three-year-old children from low-income families. Building Better Readers recruits, trains and places volunteers in elementary schools and after school at the Literacy Center to tutor first and second grade children who are struggling readers. Glades Family Education in Belle Glade provides instruction to adults with limited English language and literacy skills and their preschool children who need to develop school readiness skills. Literacy AmeriCorps recruits, trains and supervises up to 30 members who provide tutoring and instruction and serve as graduation coaches and mentors. ParentChild+ delivers a research-based home visiting model that prepares young children for school success. The Coalition oversees the program services of three agencies that employ the early learning specialists. Early Literacy Book Distribution program provides children's books for families receiving services through the Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County's Healthy Beginnings system of early childhood care and works in partnership with pediatricians and nurses at health clinics or private pediatric offices to encourage parents to read daily with their young children. The Coalition provides the books that the medical professionals give to the families. Read! Lead! Succeed! uses a literature-based social-emotional learning curriculum with elementary age children in after school programs and summer camps. Stories and STEM introduces children in after school programs and summer camps to hands-on STEM activities related to books. Village Readers Family Education in Delray Beach provides instruction to adults with very limited English language and literacy skills and tutoring for their elementary school age children. Workplace and Community Education works with local employers to provide basic English and reading instruction at the work site and with community-based organizations.
