Mission Statement
To promote and support the welfare, safety and well being of elders and youth
About This Cause
NANAY, Inc. (National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth - www.nanay.com) is a grassroots community-based charitable (501)(c)(3) organization that was established in 1994 to promote the safety and general well-being of elders and youth. NANAY’s specific goals are aimed at addressing the unmet needs of elders and youth through high-quality supportive services by improving their personal, health and home environment; reducing the loneliness and isolation of the elders; improving the ability of elders and youth to handle psychological and emotional stress and promoting their involvement in community activities. In 2000, NANAY officially opened its Community Center in North Miami, and since then has been providing free supportive services to seniors and youth, including counseling, transport, computer classes, recreational activities, health sessions, community workshops and seminars for elders, as well as intergenerational activities that combine youth mentoring with volunteer service to elders and after-school computer access for youth. NANAY health volunteers provide health counseling, free monthly medical consultations, immunizations, health forums, workshops and regular health screening. SENIOR PROGRAM: Since its Community Center opened in 2000, NANAY has developed and implemented cultural and recreational activities that have therapeutic values for physically, sensory or developmentally disabled adults. In 2007 alone, a total of 279 clients were screened and assessed, 271 elders received Center-based socialization, 115 elders received early intervention; 172 clients were provided special transport services totaling 8,474 trips to and from the Center, medical, and outdoor activities, as well as 1,047 hours of counseling and 1,503 hours of recreation and socialization; 53 caregivers registered at NANAY Center and participated in 289 hours of caregiver counseling and 212 hours of caregiver training and support; 64 home visits were given to North Miami frail elders, in addition to transport service for 73 clients, 285 sessions of computer classes and 738 sessions of recreation and socialization were provided to North Miami frail elderly residents. Computer classes (beginner, intermediate, advanced) continued to be provided 3 hours a day, 4 days a week at the NANAY Community Center, in addition to daily socialization and bonding session, twice a week ESL English classes, weekly arts & crafts sessions, Center-based soft-stretching exercises 3 times a week and weekly outdoor walking exercises for the elders. YOUTH PROGRAM: NANAY’s youth activities began in 2000, a Grandparent Matching Program that combined youth mentorship with volunteer service was launched, and an Intergenerational Fashion show was held at FIU Graham Center. Through its intergenerational program, youth were able to discuss issues about family, friendship, love, marriage, goal setting, life’s values, stress and conflict resolution. The interaction between youth and elders enabled them to share each other’s cultural sentiments, age-related similarities and differences, their views on moral ethics and social values, and the significance of good education and community involvement. NANAY’s involvement with the Tobacco-Free Miami-Dade Community Partnership gave an opportunity for 198 youth to discuss the pros and cons of smoking and learn about its consequences. NANAY was designated as one of the 20 Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Centers across the U.S., to provide not only access to state-of-the-art virtual technology but also education regarding Information Technology. HEALTH PROGRAM: NANAY has served more than 500 elders through health screening, health workshops, group counseling, transport and recreational activities. Many of them have received free hearing aids and special telephones for the hearing impaired. More than 50 frail elders received supportive services in the form of companionship, caregiver support, and escort services to doctor's appointments. Majority of elders served belong to the low- and very-low income group. Since its incorporation, NANAY's volunteer doctors and nurses have been providing free monthly health screening sessions (blood pressure and blood sugar tests) to seniors, and uninsured clients discovered to have hypertension or high blood sugar levels have been referred to appropriate physicians for further workup. NANAY has been serving Miami-Dade County elders and youth as well as low- to moderate-income families from various ethnic backgrounds. The informal and culturally diverse collaborative interaction of youth with elders through computer-related, health, social and educational activities in a safe and wholesome facility served as a powerful tool for improving interpersonal relationships of elders, addressing the intergenerational gap, and creating a stronger sense of community and family. NANAY has the cultural and linguistic competency to serve the population residing or using services in the target areas, and its programs are open to all regardless of race, ethnic background, gender preference, or disability.
