Mission Statement
To provide shelter and loving care to children who have suffered abuse or neglect and have been removed from their homes; and to provide supports to parents/caregivers of children with special needs to maximize each child’s safety and success.
About This Cause
Our programs include an emergency foster shelter for 16 children – from birth to the age of 12 - who have been removed from their homes by the Department of Children & Families due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. It operates 24 hours a day/7 days a week, 365 days per year, with awake staff around the clock. All children, including sibling groups and children with disabilities, are welcomed. Many of these children come to us, often in the middle of the night, frightened and sometimes with only the clothes on their backs. Sadly, the majority of PBC abuse victims are younger than 6. They are welcomed, fed, bathed, introduced to the other residents, given clothing and other basic necessities, and shown the house, including their room. Every effort is made to make each child feel safe and comfortable. The average length of stay is 5-7 days while a permanent home is found, either returned to their parent/s, placed with relatives, in a foster home or in a group home. All children are given a medical evaluation within 72 hours of intake by a local pediatrician, and are provided with treatment if needed. Appropriate dental and eye care and immunizations for school admission are also provided. In October of 2017, through a generous grant from the Palm Beach County Youth Services Department, we started a Family Support Program to provide much-needed services to parents/caregivers of children with special needs. These services include an Outreach Program, which educates the community on the benefits of respite care and serves as a resource center for other services and activities in the community that are available to them. Parent Training is another part, in which we host trainings sessions from area professionals including everything from behavior to potty training. FREE Respite Care is provided on a weekend, evenings, overnight, and emergency basis. When these parents don’t have a support system they begin to suffer from fatigue, stress, anxiety and depression, which leads to mental exhaustion, also called caregiver burnout. This may be accompanied by a change in attitude, from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. This in turn may lead to a less than ideal environment for the child. These parents need respite care to maintain their own health and well-being, to improve outcomes for the child. We are the only facility offering over-night and emergency respite care for these parents/caregivers of children with disabilities. Respite care is not a luxury: it is essential for a family’s well-being. With YOUR support, we can continue to provide these vital services to our community and keep all of our children safe!
