Mission Statement
NAMI Citrus' mission is to promote mental health wellness in our community through advocacy, education, empowerment, outreach and support. We implement our mission by providing free group sessions and educational presentations to our community. We provide ongoing support with a 24//7 warm line number and weekly support groups both for the person living with the condition and for the family/loved ones. NAMI Citrus demonstrates a grassroots approach to advocacy at both the state and local levels of government. We provide resource tools to those in need to empower them to seek the treatment they need to live healthy, productive lives. We also provide awareness through outreach events to educate the community and stop the stigma that keeps people from seeking treatment.
About This Cause
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. What began in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. NAMI's Signature Programs are recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as evidence based programs for people with mental health conditions. NAMI is a recognized Center of Excellence and as such NAMI Citrus is the appropriate agency to deliver these programs to our community. As a local affiliate we abide by the NAMI Standards of Excellence and all teachers, mentors, facilitators and presenters must complete rigorous training and be certified by national trainers. NAMI Citrus is committed to our county. In 2019 we were named the NAMI Florida Volunteer Affiliate of the Year and in 2020 we received Honorable Mention as the NAMI Florida Volunteer of the Year. Citrus County desperately needs NAMI Citrus to have a greater impact in our community. We currently have only one psychiatrist in the county and our psychologists and therapists are working at maximum capacity. We have only one provider, LifeStream, and they currently do not operate a facility within our county. In 2020 our law enforcement agency baker acted 1,074 people and responded to more than 2,279 calls for service regarding mental disorders/illness. We are scheduled with the Citrus County School District to present the NAMI evidence-based program Ending the Silence into the middle schools starting early in 2022 and we are presenting mental health training to the Citrus County Clerk of the Courts office in December 2021. We have a close partnership with DayStar Life Center. They provide us our office space and we work hand in hand to assist their social service clients who might need mental health care and vice versa. We coordinate with the Citrus County Sheriff. The head of their Behavioral Unit, Sgt. Rachel Montgomery, is our board chairman. We currently partner frequently with the local Department of Health, LifeStream and Citrus County Alliance to maintain communication with various community demographics. We are working on partnership plans with the YMCA and the Citrus County Library System. Presenting our educational pieces within those two organizations will increase our geographic presence in the community as well as increase traffic to and awareness of the YMCA and the libraries. All these partnerships allow us to present evidence-based, interactive programs in all areas of the county, thus increasing our ability to reach the population that needs us most.
