Mission Statement
Willow Star Haven is committed to spreading the message of optimal wellness through fitness and a plant based lifestyle. Our mission is communicated through a variety of programs based upon the belief that a proper diet and fitness can prevent or help remedy disease; and that working with companion animals can provide healing benefits for all involved. Along with existing lifestyle education, Willow Star Haven offers lifestyle coaching and therapies through a wellness retreat in Salem, South Carolina called Butterfly Ridge Mountain Retreat.
About This Cause
Health and fitness coaching and "Food for Life" classes are currently being conducted through Zoom and at our base of operation in Salem, SC. Food for Life classes are part of a program for health developed by Dr. Neal Barnard and the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine based in Washington, D.C. As taught by certified instructors, the Food for Life program teaches that a whole-food-plant-based diet can help prevent or help treat such metabolic syndrome disorders as type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease and obesity. Clinically demonstrated benefits include lower cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure and improvements in energy and mood. Food for Life classes include food preparation and tasting as demonstration or in an interactive setting and we have taught groups as small as 2 and as large as 80. No fees are charged for fitness and/or food training programs offered by the Willow Star Haven Charitable Foundation, although donations to our foundation are gratefully accepted. Willow Star Haven sponsors a Facebook page (Building Healthy Communities Upstate SC) as a discussion forum on healthy lifestyle techniques to prevent and treat illness. Additionally, wellness events are conducted, including a yearly Rally to Beat Breast Cancer and classes and discussions at our wellness retreat in SC and at individual's homes and offices as scheduled with Kimberly Kirschner Another function of the Willow Star Haven Foundation is fostering/rescue of shelter pets. Our Wellness Retreat/B & B in South Carolina is set on 10 acres at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We offer coaching and wellness counseling through fitness and whole-food-plant-based nutrition.
