The University of the Virgin Islands educates and empowers the USVI, the Caribbean, and the world through an environment that promotes creativity, innovation and excellence in teaching, student learning, research, and community engagement.

About This Cause

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and public Land Grant Institution. UVI is the only postsecondary institution in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) and HBCU located outside the continental United States. The University has Schools of Agriculture, Business, Education, and Nursing, and Colleges of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and Science and Mathematics. Faculty deliver instruction on campuses in St. Thomas and St. Croix, at a location in St. Martin, and to students around the world through UVI Online. UVI is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is ranked as the 6th Best Regional College in the Southern United States by US News and World Report. The University served 1,655 students in fall 2021 (1,381 undergraduate and 274 graduate) with a diverse enrollment: 82% minority, 68% female, 49% first generation, and 49% receiving Pell Grants. Also included in these enrollment totals are reservists, active-duty military, and veterans. UVI provides 6 associates degrees, 47 bachelor’s degrees, 11 graduate programs, 1 doctoral program, and 17 certificate programs (three postgraduate). The University has strong commitments to and is a national leader in access and opportunity through affordability. • The Virgin Islands Higher Education Scholarship Program covers the annual $5,236 cost of tuition and fees for all first-time, degree-seeking students from the Virgin Islands with a high-school grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Scholarship recipients are guaranteed degree-related, job placement upon graduation. This includes three years for full-time bachelor’s degree recipients receiving between 75%-100% of the cost of tuition. • Students from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines pay a Caribbean Partner annual tuition and fee rate of $7,551 that is comparable to regional tuition and fees rates. • Students from Puerto Rico and the United States Mainland pay an annual rate of $9,866, which is significantly lower than the $27,023 average out-of-state rate for public universities in the United States. UVI boasts more than 7,000 alumni who excel as physicians, attorneys, judges, politicians, university administrators, teachers, nurses and many other professionals. Among the many accomplished former UVI students are two Rhodes Scholars and a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. The University competes in men's and women's basketball and track and field and in co-educational esports. In 2021, the University hosted our inaugural HBCU Men's and Women's Basketball Classic that was enjoyed locally and broadcasted regionally and nationally.
