Mission Statement

Amigos de los Animales, Inc. is a 501c(3) nonprofit founded to act as a voice for the abandoned, neglected, mistreated and abused animals on the island of Puerto Rico. We are dedicated to: 1) Rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned animals and to the alleviation of their suffering and pain; 2) Educating the community about proper animal care and the laws; 3) Assisting in mass sterilization and vaccination of pets in our communities through low-cost or free clinics and humane education; 4) Collaborating with the government, community and other animal welfare groups to educate Puerto Rico on animal welfare issues and to assist in other mass sterilization programs; 5) Raising up a force of humanely educated Animal Control Officer / Cruelty Investigators through the, first ever, certification course offered in Puerto Rico monitored and approved by the State Office of Animal Control of the Puerto Rico Health Department. By acting as a voice for abused and abandoned animals in Puerto Rico, defending those who cannot speak for themselves, and uniting with other rescue organizations, we believe we will eradicate the over-population of companion animals and suffering of all animals on the island, resulting in a more humane Puerto Rico. Amigos de los Animales relies on the generosity of people like you in order to achieve this goal.

About This Cause

Amigos de los Animales (ADLA) is one of the oldest animal rescues in Puerto Rico and has acted as the voice for the abused, neglected and suffering since 2005. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home stray, abandoned and abused dogs in Puerto Rico, as well as educate our communities on the proper and humane treatment of all animals. ADLA operates a dog shelter located in the Piñones area of Loiza—one of the poorest municipalities in Puerto Rico with a poverty rate of over 50%; and known as a famous dumping ground for unwanted pets. Since its incorporation in 2005, ADLA has rescued approximately 3,300 dogs, and the Shelter (on average) houses between 55 and 75 dogs at a time. ADLA adopts its rescues within the island, or ships dogs to adopters or recipient no-kill shelters in areas on the mainland United States where the overpopulation problem is not as serious. Adopt: The more people that adopt a dog out of our shelter, the more dogs we can save from the streets! So by adopting, you are making a significant difference in more than one animals’ life! All our satos are adorable, but we do encourage potential adopters to consider their circumstances (family, job, housing situation) before making the decision to adopt). To adopt, visit: https://amigosdelosanimalespr.org/how-you-can-help/adopt/. Foster: Foster parents are always needed. Fosters are a vital part of our organization, and allow our rescue dogs a life in a loving home so they can establish a positive bond with people. Additionally, fostering provides space in our shelter for other rescues. https://amigosdelosanimalespr.org/how-you-can-help/foster/ Spay and Neuter (S/N): S/N of one pet prevents the birth of thousands of other animals. ADLA organizes low-cost or free S/N clinics for pet owners on a limited income. We also practice trap/neuter/release of animals that cannot be kept in the shelter environment. Assistance: We consider pets members of the family, and medical care can be expensive. We sponsor emergency medical assistance to help individuals and families who are on a limited income and cannot afford a special procedure or medication their pet needs to stay healthy. Education: The future for animals (including the dogs in Puerto Rico, known as “satos”) lies with the generations to come. We are committed to educating at the grade school level and either visit schools, or receive groups at the Shelter, for conferences or general discussions on animal welfare and the importance of showing animals compassion and respect. We also emphasize the need to provide proper care for companion animals. ADLA coordinates Puerto Rico's only six-day Animal Control Officer-Cruelty Investigator certification course alongside Puerto Rico’s Department of Health and the Career Development Institute. We have coordinated eight (8) courses thus far and produced 298 investigators. Volunteer: Our volunteers make Puerto Rico a better place for people and their pets. We are always looking for volunteers that can help us in the daily routine of running a our dog shelter, as well as those interested in taking photographs of our cuties or editing videos that show off shelter life. We depend on our volunteers to operate, so they all involved in all aspects of ADLA. To volunteer, visit: https://amigosdelosanimalespr.org/volunteer-application/ Opportunities include: - Animal Care Proper animal care is critical to the health and happiness of the animals in our care. Animal care includes cleaning the kennels in the dog areas, walking the dogs, grooming, and socializing and playing with the dogs. Animal care may also include transport if you have a car or can drive a van. All animal care volunteers should be over the age of 14 or accompanied by an adult. - Saturday at the Shelter Every Saturday, we host a special Saturday at the Shelter for volunteers interested in cleaning the dog kennels and front patio of the shelter, and spending time with the dogs. Tasks start at 9:30am and we go until 12pm, perfect time for heading to the beach! Sign up for the Saturday event here. - Housekeeping We require the help of many volunteers to keep our animals, as well as their inside and outside living spaces, clean. From sweeping and mopping to washing windows to laundry, daily housekeeping keeps the shelter nice and tidy for our dogs. All housekeeping volunteers should be over the age of 14 or accompanied by an adult. - Special Events ADLA hosts special events and fundraisers throughout the year. An event volunteer may be involved in organizing and setting up an event, receiving and monitoring invites and registrations, working an information booth, speaking with vendors, and much more. If you love socializing and managing, this is the perfect volunteer role for you. - Fundraising Proper animal care depends on generating funds. Our funding comes solely from private donations and grants and is used to pay vet and utility bills, buy shelter supplies, and maintain our shelter and shelter workers. You can help by organizing online fundraisers, or by fundraising in your school or office. We have fundraising goals and tips we can share with you; and are sure we can learn from you as well! - Maintenance/Grounds ADLA has a building to unkeep and appreciates volunteer assistance with repairs. Volunteers who are skilled in building maintenance and construction would enjoy this work, which is a little more heavy lifting than housecleaning. All building maintenance volunteers should be over the age of 18. - Creative and design If you like taking photographs or videos of dogs or creating awesome graphics using our own inventory, ADLA wants you! We also appreciate writers or help with website and social media design and marketing. You can help get dogs adopted by writing awesome pet profiles!
