About This Cause

Techos Pa’ Mi Gente is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the construction of dignified roofs and housing rehabilitation in communities affected by natural disasters. It contributes to improving the quality of life of the individuals that make up these communities, promotes self-management and provides training in basic building skills to promote resilience. Our work goes far beyond repairing walls, roofs, floors, and material elements, if necessary. It also repairs smiles, supports the respiratory, physical, and emotional health of families who have been suffering for years from the vicissitudes of living under a tarp. We serve families from disadvantaged communities that do not have the resources to recover effectively after the Hurricanes that have affected us. Frequently, households include children and young adults that are suffering the vulnerable conditions of living deprived of a safe roof. These conditions include humidity, molds, and structural damages. It all ends up affecting their mental and physical health. We strive to rebuild the best possible reinforced roofs, using guidelines, with hope that this will improve the lives of children and families. With our mission we want to transform lives and family’s health. Repairs are becoming more expensive every day because homes have been exposed to the weather for so long that they require more complex recovery tasks, as well as more expensive building materials. Repairs now include interior and exterior walls, floors, and other areas damaged after being covered by tarp for 4 years. There are still more than 20,000 families living without shelter, and TPMG has a list of more than 900 families who have applied for the organization's assistance. All the support received by our organization is directed to continue this gesture in solidarity with Puerto Rican families and the resilience of their communities. History In 2017, Amarilis González, today’s director of our organization, frustrated to see families who had lost their roofs in Hurricane María losing everything each time it rained, wrote on her social media "If I had tarps, I would install them myself!". Her friends, relatives, and neighbors responded to the call and hundreds of tarps arrived at her doorstep. Along with her neighbors and with a study of needs that they prepared, they identified cases to attend. The installation was 100% voluntary and thus, Toldos Pa' Mi Gente (now, Techos Pa' Mi Gente) was established. In 2018, after several months of installing tarps almost daily, volunteers concluded that too much carpentry work had to be done to install a tarp properly. Therefore, the decision was made to begin repairing roofs permanently following the: Construction Guide for Hurricane Resistant Homes, created by CIAPR and FEMA after Hurricane Hugo, with updates in terms of new technologies and materials. At that point the organization became Techos Pa’ Mi Gente . In 2021, we moved to an operations center that is aligned with our organizational growth goals in terms of serving more families simultaneously. This space provides temporary accommodation for volunteer groups and TPMG beneficiaries, who qualify. In addition, it allows us to work on other projects to further develop our social commitment to the community. In turn, it provides space for administrative offices and training for volunteers in construction, health, and safety. Since 2017 we are members of PRVOAD: Puerto Rico’s Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters and currently we are part of their Board of Directors. PRVOAD is an association of organizations that lead response efforts, communicate urgent needs to the wider National VOAD network, and aid communities affected by disaster. Our organization’s commitment to help is so big that we have grown rapidly with a solid, transparent, and efficient management. In almost five (5) years, there are 73 families who have been provided with a safe roof and countless others have had their needs channeled towards the best avenues of help. All these homes have been repaired with 100% volunteer hands and funds raised by our organization to buy the materials needed.
