Mission Statement

Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County is a faith-based organization dedicated to improving lives by building modest, affordable homes in partnership with our communities and families in need. Our vision is for every person in Sonoma County to have a simple, decent place to live.

About This Cause

Habitat for Humanity does not give homes away. To qualify, families must demonstrate a need (live in unsafe, crowded, or sub-standard housing), earn between 50-60% of the local median income, and demonstrate the ability to sustain mortgage payments. Habitat families also contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" building their home and homes of other families. Habitat families purchase a modest home that is an appropriate size—with enough bedrooms that children have a quiet place for homework and kitchens are large enough for the family to eat together. Families are free from the fear of ever-increasing rents and are able to focus on family goals. Habitat realizes that we cannot achieve our goals alone. A major thrust of our work is to deepen existing community partnerships (e.g., with local architects, engineers, home builders, local government and businesses, schools, the faith community, and individuals) as well as to form effective new partnerships with individuals and organizations. Family Resource and Mentoring Program (education): Types of classes include: • Home-ownership • Home maintenance • Financial management • Understanding CC&Rs • Dispute resolution • Emergency preparedness • Use of technology -ReStore: A retail business that sells donated surplus new and used materials. Inventory is donated from local vendors, contractors, and the community. Some materials are used to build Habitat homes. While providing low-cost items for consumers, the store reduces the amount of waste that goes into the landfill. All operating profits from ReStore sales support Habitat’s build programs. The model works! Habitat families report: improved education and skills, feeling of civic responsibility and respect for community, sense of pride in accomplishments, and greater financial independence and breaking the cycle of poverty. There has never been a foreclosure on a Habitat for Humanity home in Sonoma County!
