MERCER VETERINARY CLINIC FOR THE HOMELESS

Davis, California, 95617-0000 United States

Mission Statement

In 1992, a group of UC Davis veterinary students founded Mercer Veterinary Clinic as a 501(c)3 nonprofit to provide free veterinary services to the pets of individuals experiencing homelessness. Our organization is led entirely by volunteers, including veterinary student Coordinators who handle all aspects of clinic management, a volunteer Board of Directors, and the volunteer veterinary students, undergraduate students, and veterinarians who staff each clinic. Mercer Veterinary Clinic is entirely funded by grants and donations.

About This Cause

Monthly clinics are held at each of two locations: Sacramento: Mercer Veterinary Clinic has enjoyed a long partnership with Loaves and Fishes and currently operates out of a free-standing clinic on their campus. Building improvements were made In 2016 to convert it to a permanent structure, including four exam rooms and pharmacy and laboratory areas. The surgery and dental suite became operational in 2018. Davis: In 2020, a second location was established. Davis Pet Advocacy and Wellness (Davis PAW or DPAW), in partnership with the Davis Respite Center, serves clients experiencing homelessness in Yolo County. At both of our monthly clinics, we provide the following services: Wellness exams and vaccinations. Problem-based medical exams, including diagnostics and treatment. Flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives. Pet food, including prescription diets. Referral for spay/neuter. Additional procedures, including dentistry and surgery, are performed at our Sacramento facility or referred to other clinics as needed. Our services benefit our clients, their pets, and our volunteers in the following ways: Clients: Clients can keep their beloved companions with them despite their hardships. Our clients may rely on their pets for emotional support, companionship, protection, and warmth at night. Some services, including daytime kennels and pet-friendly housing opportunities, require current vaccinations and that pets be spayed/neutered. Pets: Receive needed preventative and medical care. Providing spay/neuter services reduces pet overpopulation. Volunteers: Veterinary and undergraduate students gain valuable skills through hands-on practice, including patient handling and performing physical exams, drawing blood and giving vaccines, and all aspects of client communication. Veterinary students practice the entire process of working through cases while building relationships with community veterinarians. Volunteer veterinarians enjoy working in a collaborative, mentoring environment while serving their community. We are especially thrilled when former students return to the clinic as new doctors!
