Mission Statement
Our purpose is to improve the lives of millions of people who suffer from the burdens of brain disease and brain injury. One Mind fosters groundbreaking improvements in research and collaboration that will accelerate the development of diagnostics, treatments, preventions and cures for all brain diseases and injuries.
About This Cause
ONE MIND is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to curing the diseases of the brain and eliminating the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and brain injuries. ONE MIND sponsors groundbreaking new research, creates public-private partnerships, and is building a brain data exchange portal for shared scientific data. Our mission is to accelerate the development of improved diagnostics, more effective treatments, and, ultimately, preventions and cures for all types of mental illness and brain injury. ONE MIND works to find real solutions to the epidemic of brain disease, improving the lives of current and future generations. Our primary mission is to support expanded research in all areas of brain disease and injury, which will lead to improved patient outcomes as fast as possible. To accomplish this, there must be a major change in the way brain research is conducted: research must be done on a larger scale (more “big science”) that will make possible accelerated advancements in diagnostics, treatments, and, ultimately, cures. The “APOLLO PROGRAM,” the One Mind Brain Data Exchange Portal, is our first major step toward finding better treatments and cures. This portal will be an “open access” interactive portal that will become the largest source of brain data in the world. It will be used for research and data mining by thousands of scientists and clinical researchers in industry, academia, and government. Research indicates that many brain diseases are related, and sharing disease data is a critical part of our strategy. Our overall goal is to support and enable large-scale research projects in all areas of brain disease. The initial research project is the “GEMINI PROGRAM,” which will include 3,000-5,000 patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and, in some cases, Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) in a multi-year longitudinal study. The large amount of data generated by Gemini will be housed in Apollo. We are also collaborating on several other major programs in different stages of development to study multiple sclerosis (Orion), Alzheimer’s, and dementia, as well as brain disease biosensor systems. These projects will generate additional data for Apollo and establish a research “template” that can be adapted to all disease areas to expand our fundamental understanding of brain disease — and translate it into cures. ONE MIND is led by CEO Pete Chiarelli, a retired 4-star General and former Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. The founders and co-chairmen of ONE MIND are investor, philanthropist, and winery owner Garen Staglin and former U.S. Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy.
