Mission Statement

The American Safe Climbing Association is a non-profit organization of climbers who are dedicated to making the sport of rock climbing safer by replacing unsafe bolts and anchors and by educating climbers, land managers and the public about climbing and anchor safety.

About This Cause

The American Safe Climbing Association (ASCA) has a straightforward mission - to help outdoor climbers safely use fixed anchors. Outdoor rock climbers rely on various fixed anchors to climb and descend. Anchors can range from a simple sling around a tree or boulder to a small bolt or piton hammered in the rock. These anchors have often been deteriorating for decades and pose a real danger to climbers, few of whom have the experience to safely evaluate many anchors. The ASCA supplies volunteers with the safest and longest-lasting materials for maintaining these anchors. In the case of bolts, ASCA volunteers make every effort to re-use the original hole, remove excess old fixed hardware, and camouflage new hardware to reduce the visual profile of fixed anchors. The ASCA also strives to educate climbers about the dangers of old hardware, to work with land managers, and to consult the local and national climbing community about anchor maintenance.
