Mission Statement
The Auburn Interfaith Food Closet provides nutritious food to those in need, preserving their dignity and encouraging self-reliance.
About This Cause
In providing food, we follow the USDA Choose My Plate guidelines to provide nine meals per person in the family from each food group. We depend highly on monetary donations to buy fresh foods (e.g., milk, eggs), in-kind food donations from our community, and participate in the Emergency Food Assistance program. Each family may visit the food closet only once every 30 days and receive three days worth of food per person in the family. In 2019 we provided groceries for 187,119 meals. We served an average of 657 families each month (or 21,336 individuals in those families). The cost of each meal is $1.99. We have modified our services for COVID-19 by serving people in their cars rather than in the building. We want to keep the clients and our volunteers safe. As a result, some of the normal services we describe below are hampered because they are not coming in the building. But, we do our best to provide them with the services and groceries they need during this time. We encourage better nutrition by offering recipes for the foods we provide, video demonstrations on nutrition, food safety, cooking, and preparing meals as well as an in-person "tasting" once a month. Our goal is to help them stretch their food budget as well as helping them to try new healthier foods. We also provide birthday bags for children under 10 and books. In addition, we modify our menus for the homeless, following our goals, but providing them food they can use. We have about 220 volunteers. This is an all volunteer organization; there are no paid staff. Governance is by a board of directors who represent our sponsoring congregations. We care about the people we serve and our volunteers.
