Mission Statement
The mission of Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas (SPSFNWA) is changing lives by encouraging personal success. We create opportunities for single parents in Northwest Arkansas to build futures for their families. We do this by providing direct financial assistance to low-income single parents who are pursuing a career-related course of study to gain sufficient employment and meet the basic needs of their families.
About This Cause
Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Northwest Arkansas (SPSFNWA) serves the residents of Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington counties in Arkansas. Our vision is to be the leading nonprofit in Northwest Arkansas, offering resources that inspire generational transformation, increasing community awareness on the educational barriers single parents face, and strengthening the region's workforce. The scholarship program through SPSFNWA is unique in that awarded funds are not restricted to books or tuition but can be used for general living expenses such as childcare, gasoline, rent, utilities, car insurance, or even groceries. Therefore, awarded scholarships benefit not just the recipient but the entire family. In addition to financial support, SPSFNWA offers professional development programs to help ensure the academic and career success of recipients. These programs include but are not limited to resume building, interview tactics, successful dress for the business world, and professional networking. Counseling services are also available free of charge to 100% of our recipients and their families. This program provides yet another opportunity for recipients and their families to build better futures and accomplish personal success in their lives. When families are lifted out of poverty, the entire community prospers. Our graduates become productive, tax-paying, self-supporting members of the community. In 2021, the average starting income of recipients was $15,855. Six months after graduation this annual income increased by 252% to $40,070. Local businesses gain from having a better-educated workforce and consumers with disposable income. The rapidly growing Northwest Arkansas region, as well as the entire state, profit from having tax-paying citizens rather than dependents on charitable and public resources. Most importantly, families we serve benefit by breaking the cycle of poverty. The children of our scholarship recipients are highly likely to attend and succeed in college themselves, by following the example set for them by their parents.
