Mission Statement

The mission of the Troy Historical Society is to collect and preserve historical photographs, documents, and other artifacts related to the town of Troy Idaho and the surrounding areas. This currently includes the following categories: Household items used by early residents, early businesses, early farms and homesteads, early timber industry, schools, churches and local participation in US armed forces. We also organize and set up displays of our collections on a rotating basis for public view and have built a computer system dedicated to storing digital copies of photos and documents in our collections and for organizing and cataloging the same. We have purchased a building on Main St., have established a Museum there and are in the process of expanding our activities, setting up displays for public view and providing programs to better serve our community.

About This Cause

Preserving our Past: The Troy Historical Society was born out of the activities surrounding the town’s 1992 Centennial Celebrations and a 1995 “All Schools” reunion. As stories, photos and precious items were collected, it became obvious that a more formal organization was needed to help our community explore and preserve our rich past. Since those early beginnings, the Society has collected and cataloged thousands of photographs, newspapers, uniforms, historical costumes, artifacts and treasures. Numerous books and oral histories have been researched and published, and the Society plays a key role during community celebrations by providing displays and programs. The Society currently offers to the community numerous services designed to build interest and preserve our local history, including: • Scanning and cataloging photos that will be available online. • Recording oral histories of local families and community members. • Helping with youth projects at the high school and youth organizations like the local Boy Scouts. • Developing narrated tours of the area. • Providing historical displays for local churches, restaurants and other organizations. Securing our Future: As interest and collections grow, so does the need for space. Early meetings were held in the city library until a local bank offered use of their conference room in 2008. Eventually, the room was packed with no room to add additional collections or store display items. Other important collections were scattered across the area in members’ homes or barns. The Troy Historical Society now has a permanent space to store current collections, work on ongoing projects and programs, and offer more frequent interactions and displays to the community. We own a local storefront on Main Street, convenient for volunteers to meet at, and visitors to come to research information about their local roots. We also aspire to encourage local youth to explore and celebrate their area history. Monthly evening programs have become a part of our community outreach with guest speakers presenting interesting historical topics to the people in the area. The Building: This permanent home for Troy’s history has become a cornerstone for the community, helping local families and area visitors explore the rich history of our region. Improved access and operating hours allow us to partner more effectively with other local and regional Historical Societies, such as Latah, Nez Perce and Idaho State. Additional space has allowed us to more effectively catalogue and preserve current and future collections. Hours of operation have been established, and additional members recruited to the Society.
