Mission Statement
Angel's Pediatric Cardiology, Inc. d/b/a Angel's Pediatric Heart House provides financial, emotional and social support to South Florida children with Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) and Childhood Acquired Heart Disease and raises CHD awareness. The organization was founded in 2004 by Sonia Perez in memory of her late husband, Dr. Angel R. Perez, a South Florida pediatric cardiologist who succumbed to kidney cancer in January 2000. We assist CHD families who are in financial crisis during their child's hospitalization for cardiac surgery by providing them with financial support for basic human needs. We help connect CHD children with other CHD children for peer-to-peer support as well as providing peer-to-peer support for the parents. APHH partners with four local South Florida children's hospital to provide hospital outreach--Miami Children's Hospital, University of Miami Holtz Children's Hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital and Palm Beach Children's Hospital.
About This Cause
Congenital Heart Defect (CHD)/Disease is the number one birth defect in the U.S. and in all South Florida counties. It is the number one cause of death from a birth defect in the first year of life and twice as many children will die from a CHD as children with all forms of childhood cancers combined. There is no cure for CHDs, only repairs. Many families with CHD children fall into financial duress due to their child's extended hospital stays for cardiac surgery. Non-medical, on demand expenses related to the child's health care and not reimbursed by health care providers or other agencies begin to have an immediate effect on the family's budget. At Angel's Pediatric Heart House, we provide financial support for basic human needs--food, rent, utilities, transportation, etc.--during a child's hospitalization for cardiac surgery, so that parents can focus on the care of their child without having to worry about being evicted from their home, having a car repossessed, not having running water or electricity or food to eat. We know that after a diagnosis of CHD, parents feel alone and APHH helps them to connect with other families who have experienced the same challenges of raising a child with a life threatening illness, as well as connecting CHD kids with their peers as they get older. Although CHD is the number one birth defect and number one cause of death from a birth defect in the first year of life, many people are unaware of cardiac issues in children and at APHH we strive to increase awareness in our community.
