Mission Statement

This I Believe is an international organization engaging people in writing and sharing essays describing the core values that guide their daily lives. More than 125,000 of these essays, written by people from all walks of life, have been archived on our website, heard on public radio, chronicled through books, and featured in weekly podcasts. The project is based on the popular 1950s radio series of the same name hosted by Edward R. Murrow.

About This Cause

At a time of social, political, and racial division, This I Believe encourages people to begin the difficult task of developing sensitivity—even respect—for beliefs different from one's own. By sharing the stories of our core beliefs, This I Believe engages a broad cross-section of the world's citizens in a public discourse to promote the active sharing, listening, and understanding of one another's values and beliefs. Since 2006, This I Believe has collected more than 125,000 essays from both everyday citizens and well-known names. Essays from individuals such as Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, Bill Gates, and Muhammad Ali join those of ordinary citizens such as teachers, artists, doctors, farmers, corporate leaders, and students. To broaden the reach of our mission, This I Believe has developed media partnerships with National Public Radio, Public Radio International, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and USA Weekend. In addition, we maintain a robust website to invite everyone to participate in this exercise. On the website, we provide educational curricula for middle school, high school, and college educators in order to provide teachers with a meaningful writing assignment that values introspection and self-evaluation, while offering students an opportunity to write for a real-world audience, and not just a grade.
