A place of hope for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
About This Cause
The Gregory Kistler Treatment Center is an out-patient facility specializing in the treatment and rehabilitation of children. The Kistler Center was founded in 1978 and named for Gregory Kistler who was injured in an automobile accident at the age of six. Several years later, Gregory’s niece, Michelle, was born with spina bifida. As a result of these circumstances, the Kistler family became very aware of the need for a center in Fort Smith that could provide therapy services, and at the same time, allow parents to see that they are not alone. What was born out of one family’s need, over 37 years ago, has grown to become a respected outpatient treatment center known throughout the Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma region. Children who receive physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy and/or aquatic therapy at The Gregory Kistler Treatment Center span a wide range of diagnoses and needs. Some children need assistance with the basics of daily living, such as feeding and sitting up, while others may have problems with balance and coordination. The child’s diagnosis and individual needs determine the frequency and duration of treatment with most children receiving therapy regularly for a period of months to several years. A prescription from the child’s primary care physician is required. Once the prescription is obtained, an evaluation is scheduled. Then, individual goals are determined and therapy is scheduled. Each child and each family is treated with care and is given the quality of treatment that you would want for your own child. In 2011, the Kistler Center was certified by the Department of Human Services, Developmental Disabilities Services as an Alternative Community Services (ACS) Waiver provider. The ACS Waiver program serves children and adults with developmental disabilities with an onset before the age of 22. The Kistler Center is certified to provide services in eleven counties in our region. Now, the Kistler Center can bring help and hope to children and adults by providing choice and opportunity to live, play, and work in the home and community. In 2012, the Kistler Center was certified as a provider for Autism Waiver by the Arkansas Autism Partnership in conjunction with Partners for Inclusive Communities and the University of Arkansas. This program provides intensive in-home intervention for children 18 months to 5 years. Both the ACS Waiver and Autism Waiver programs are a natural continuation of our services.
