Mission Statement
Children's Surgical Centre aims to improve the quality of life for Cambodia's disabled by providing free or low-cost rehabilitation surgery. Integral to this mission is a program of training local surgeons and health workers, focusing on the development of sustainable health services. CSC is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) recognised by the Cambodian Royal Government and incorporated as a not-for-profit in the state of Alaska, USA. CSC has no religious or political affiliation.
About This Cause
CSC's Founder and CEO, Dr. Jim Gollogly, a British-American surgeon, first came to Cambodia in the early ’90s for a six-month assignment with the American Red Cross. After thirty years of war and genocide by the Pol Pot regime, in which the country's educated were targeted for execution, the medical system suffered tremendously. Upon arriving to Cambodia, Dr. Jim found that various disabilities and landmine injuries were rampant. Dr. Jim returned to Cambodia in 1998, where CSC started as a small project to help victims of landmine injuries, many of whom were children, and has grown into what it is today. CSC provides a wide range of surgical care to impoverished Cambodians - free or low cost care. Further, CSC works with a wide range of referral networks and NGOs, providing surgeries for orphans, at-risk youth, sight-impaired, hearing impaired, and victims of devastating road accidents. In 2023, CSC performed 2,177 free surgeries for disadvantaged Cambodians and conducted over 16,600 consultations. Patients come to CSC from all over the country; many travel multiple days and whole families sacrifice to get the necessary care. WHAT WE DO: Training: Over the past 25 years, CSC has grown into what it is today – a widely regarded surgical teaching hospital providing free or low-cost surgery and treatment for disadvantaged Cambodians. As part of our Training Program, international surgeons come regularly and repeatedly to teach new procedures and improve techniques. CSC works with a range of specialists locally and from around the world to provide the best possible care, including telemedicine conferences and collaboration with partner hospitals/organizations to provide comprehensive services. Partnerships include the University of Hong Kong, University of Bristol, Oxford University, University of Puthisastra, and many others. Many of the CSC staff - nurses, IT, surgeons, and medical support staff - are sent abroad for training in countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Thailand, and the USA. Staff participation in conferences, academic presentations, and collaboration with other health professionals is required. Surgery: CSC provides a range of surgical services that are often unaffordable for most Cambodians and may not be provided in local hospitals because they lack the expertise, human resources, and equipment. In addition, CSC provides effective surgical care for very complex cases not available elsewhere in Cambodia and for people who have no other options. As the quality of care slowly improves, and other venues can provide care for the simpler cases (such as cleft lip), CSC moves on to more challenging cases – like meningoencephalocele, brachial plexus injury repair, and vitreo-retinal surgery. CSC operations include: ORTHOPAEDICS and PLASTICS • Surgery for club feet and other congenital abnormalities • Treatment of chronic dislocations, mal-united and non-united fractures • Spinal surgery & Hip or knee replacement • Correction of deformities from polio and other infections • Brachial plexus injury repair and tendon-nerve transfer OPHTHALMOLOGY • Cataract Surgery • Paediatric Ophthalmology • Oculoplastic surgery • Squint surgery • Vitreoretinal surgery MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY • Cleft lip and palate repairs • Facial reconstruction for traumatic defects • Head and neck tumours (eg. Meningoencephalocoeles) • Correction of deformities caused by severe infections (eg. Noma) EAR, NOSE and THROAT • Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy • Myringoplasty (perforated eardrum from chronic infection) • Hearing Loss • Cholesteatoma Throughout the duration of their stay, patients are provided nutritious food and clean water to relieve the financial and mental stress of being away from home. We also provide physiotherapy care and speech therapy for comprehensive treatment. CSC’s expenditure continues to increase with improved and expanded services. For example, the Orthopaedics and Plastics Department sees a high volume of motorbike injuries with large bone fracture and nerve injury patients as few local public hospitals provide complex brachial plexus repair care. Our goal is to continue to fill gaps in services otherwise not offered in public hospitals, as 80% of Cambodia’s population lives in rural poverty (less than $2 per day). It is believed that the number of disabled persons in Cambodia will decrease with the increase of development over many years - services will be improved, and funds will be allocated for disability treatment. For now, however, CSC is providing a widely needed service to those most in need - by restoring blindness, the ability to walk, or simply performing a tonsillectomy so a child can return to school - CSC is exponentially helping to empower poor families and their communities.
