Mission Statement

West Side Campaign Against Hunger alleviates hunger by ensuring that all New Yorkers have access with dignity to a choice of healthy food and supportive services.

About This Cause

West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH) has been at the forefront of innovation for 40 years, developing the first customer-choice supermarket style pantry in the United States. WSCAH offers healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein, and dairy where customers can choose which foods best suit their diets and lifestyles. Last year, WSCAH provided more than 1.6 million pounds of food - 41% of which was fresh produce - to over 20,600 individuals. In order to serve a larger population and provide services for those that cannot easily access our 86th Street Market, WSCAH created its Mobile Market which brings healthy food and support services directly to neighborhoods with high rates of poverty and food insecurity in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. The Mobile Market has worked in partnership with 18 organizations, is on the road 4 days a week, and serves up to 150 families per visit. Beyond the provision of food, WSCAH offers a comprehensive suite of services aimed at helping customers on their journey to food security. All clients who come through WSCAH’s door meet with a member of the Social Services team who guide first-time customers through an initial intake assessment which informs what benefits and services they might be eligible for. Benefits include: referrals to access shelter, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, financial counseling and tax preparation, educational programs, immigration legal assistance, and sign ups for health insurance, SNAP, SCRIE, and DRIE. WSCAH also provides opportunities for growth through the Culinary Pathways program - a comprehensive 12-week course that equips students with core culinary skills (including knife skills, industry focused cooking techniques, culinary math, and food safety) and the essential soft skills necessary to find and maintain employment after the program has ended. WSCAH provides students with assistance in goal setting, financial literacy, resume writing, and interview skills. Students are also encouraged to work with our Social Services department to receive a range of additional supportive services and resources.
