America SCORES Seattle develops youth who are engaged students, make healthy choices and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.
About This Cause
America SCORES Seattle engages low-income elementary school students in a safe and supportive after school environment with a creative and enriching youth development program using soccer, poetry, and community service to help them develop physical, intellectual, and social competencies. SCORES is free to students and their families and provides transportation, healthy snacks, and all needed supplies to eliminate barriers to participation. Our program runs for 30 weeks during the school year. At each school, a girls’ team and a boys’ team are formed. For 1.5 hours every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, students play soccer and learn lessons about teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership while taking part in physical exercise. On Tues and Thurs in the fall, they improve their reading and writing skills through poetry, which they also perform to build self-confidence. In the spring, they use Tuesdays and Thursdays to work with teammates on a community service project in their neighborhood. SCORES students are selected based on interest, commitment and need as determined by classroom teachers.
