Mission Statement
Our mission is to empower older adults and people with disabilities to thrive, and to live independently, with dignity and a strong quality of life.
About This Cause
Friends in Action was founded in 2003; and opened the Senior Center in the fall of 2009. Currently there are three paid staff, eleven members of the Board of Directors, 100 volunteers, and 1,200 registered clients, Friends in Action provides free services to elderly and disabled residents of Hancock County with one-on-one volunteer support. We recruit, train and coordinate volunteers and match them with requests for services. Our services include individual transportation, delivery of prepared meals and food commodity boxes, delivery of prescriptions, help with chores, and friendly calls and visits. The most requested service is for transportation. We currently provide about 6,600 trips a year. We also operate a Senior Center and about 20 of our volunteers helping with Senior Center operations. The Senior Center provides coffee hours, hot meals, educational and enrichment opportunities and, fitness, health and wellness programs and opportunities to socialize, all of which serve to avoid or eliminate the ill effects of isolation that are often visited on senior residents of rural communities.
