Mission Statement
HMCHA works to build a strong & faithful Horn of Africa through child sponsorships and working with the community of Yerer, near Addis Ababa, to complete projects they request through a local committee of 5 people. In May, 2014 we finished a life-saving bridge over the Wadecha River. Then the community requested a community center / classrooms for tutoring children and adult education. The community center is finished and open, with a library of about 1300 books in Oromiffa and English. There is also a computer lab, but no internet available yet. Tutoring classes up to grade 8 are offered as well as beginning computer skills. A new primary school just opened in December, with grades K-1, adding a grade until grade 4.
About This Cause
Holistic MInistry of Children of the Horn of Africa is a non-denominational Christian non-profit that works to help children and their families improve their lives and to develop spiritual leadership and responsiblity in the youth we serve. To be sponsored, children must attend school. A local committee chooses the most needy families, many of them orphans living with relatives or with one parent. Sponsorships provide a monthly stipend including money for school supplies and uniforms, medical account, savings account, Christmas fund and an annual field trip for the sponsored children. With this money, health and diet improve, families are able to buy goats, chickens, for their farms, and school performance improves with better diets. Instead of eating only 3-4 days per week, families are able to eat every day. Our goal is to increase the number of sponsored children to 200 in the next 2 years. The number of sponsored children as of March, 2021 is 125. The community center is finished and operating, with children coming daily to use the library, receive tutoring and learn computer skills. This is the only library in an area of approximately 20,000 people scattered in villages around Yerer.
