Mission Statement
Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp is located in West Little Rock, Arkansas on 88 acres nestled in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains with the Little Maumelle River bordering one side. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built most of the buildings, including the cabins, in the 1930’s. As one of the top 200 oldest camps in the nation, Pfeifer Camp offers a rustic setting with modern facilities including a large ball field, full-size basketball court, junior Olympic size swimming pool, garden, and greenhouse. Pfeifer Camp offers Summer Camp for 9-14 year olds, Alternative Classroom Experience (A.C.E.) for at-risk third, fourth and fifth graders, parenting workshops, teacher training workshops, an Honor Camp program, and a Counselor-In-Training program for 14 to 17 year olds. Pfeifer Camp is unique in that all of its programs are free to all participants. This is possible in large part to the long-standing funding collaborative of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Little Rock and the local school districts.
About This Cause
Nestled on 88 acres in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains with the Little Maumelle River bordering on one side, Joseph Pfeifer Kiwanis Camp offers a rustic setting with cabins constructed in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. In addition to the original cabins, current facilities include a one room school house, computer lab, kitchen and dining hall, bath house, large ball field, a full-size basketball court, a junior Olympic size swimming pool, a garden, and greenhouse. Pfeifer Camp is unique in that all of its programs are free to participants due in large part to the long-standing funding collaborative of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Little Rock and the local school districts. Pfeifer Camp is certified by the American Camp Association and the only Arkansas camp licensed as a residential child-care facility through the Arkansas Department of Human Services. Pfeifer Camp has a long history of helping disadvantaged and at-risk youth. Since 1929 the camp has provided a free summer residential camping program for 9 to 14 year olds. Each summer approximately 300 campers spend a week hiking, swimming, canoeing, camping, cooking out, playing games, and participating in team-building initiatives. Campers who prove to be honorable and respectful are invited to participate in the special Honor Camp at the end of the season. The Alternative Classroom Experience (ACE), which has operated since 1988 for at-risk students of Little Rock and Pulaski County School Districts, is a 30 day residential, educational, and wilderness experience for third, fourth, and fifth graders who are not achieving their potential in the regular classroom. Annually serving 160 students, this prevention program provides a highly structured classroom with certified teachers. Besides academics, campers learn problem solving skills, crisis management skills, and acceptance of personal responsibility through a variety of outdoor, environmental, and team-building activities. Other components of the program are a transition period where students are monitored upon return to their regular classroom, long-term follow up through the completion of 7th grade and collaboration with other local youth agencies to provide continued service during the teen years. As an incentive, all campers who continue to do well in school receive a free scholarship for summer camp. ACE Parents receive essential training through mandatory weekly parenting workshops. Pfeifer Camp is an AmeriCorps National Service site with 14 full-time members who each provide at least 1700 hours of service. Members live in the cabins with campers and serve as mentors and tutors during ACE and summer camp. A Counselor-in-Training program for 14-17 year old campers provides opportunities to serve and train with the AmeriCorps counselors and staff. At age 18, CITs are eligible to become paid staff or enroll in AmeriCorps.
