Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide comprehensive pediatric healthcare, which recognizes the special needs of children, through excellence and the continuous improvement of patient care, education, research, child advocacy, and management.

About This Cause

Children's Hospital is a 247-bed, full-service general pediatric hospital with a medical staff of more than 420 physicians, practicing in more than 40 pediatric specialties. Last year, our hospital recorded more than 200,000 patient visits, with children coming to us from every parish (county) in Louisiana, 41 states and three foreign countries. The hospital has a policy of never turning away a child who needs the care we provide. Our hospital also conducts the Greater New Orleans Immunization Network (GNOIN) which provides free childhood immunizations to children throughout our community. Immunizations are provided through a mobile clinic that travels to 12 locations in the New Orleans metro area to provide the immunizations. All immunizations are recorded in our state's online immunization registry, and a schedule of when the bus will be at each location is ditributed to area churches for distribution to the public. The hospital also conducts the School Kids Immunization Network (SKIP) program that involves sending registered nurses to schools in Orleans and St. Bernard parishes. The nurses review the shot records of each child in the school and make sure that all immunizations have been recorded into the state's online registry. If a child is lacking a required immunization, a letter is sent home to the child's parents. If the parents sign the enclosed permission slip, the child receive the required immunization for free when the immunization returns to the school in about 4 weeks. All immunizations are recorded in the state's online registry. The bus visits each school 3-4 times a year to ensure a high level of immunity for the children. The hospital also maintains the Audrey Hepburn CARE Center to provide medical examinations and treatment for children who are suspected of being the victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect. The facility is housed in a house located on our Calhoun Street Clinic. Physicians examine children to find evidence of abuse, provide evidence to the criminal court system to aid in the prosecution of offenders and testify in court at the trials of those offenders. Counseling services are also provided for the children who have been victimized. Finally, our hospital also maintains the Children's Hospital Assistance Program (CHAP) to provide assistance to families that earn a little too much to qualify for care through Medicaid, but not enough to afford even modest insurance coverage. Typically, a family of four can earn up to approximately $40,000 annually and still qualify for care through Medicaid. The same family--earning more than $40,000 but less than $72,000, may receive care at no out-of-pocket cost through our CHAP Program. If the family has insurance, the insurance company is billed and any co-pays are written off.
