Mission Statement

SERVE. PROVIDE. CHAMPION. At Evergreen, we serve, provide for and champion individuals with disabilities.

About This Cause

In 1959, Evergreen Life Services (Evergreen) began when the parents of four young men with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) dreamed of a place where their children could live as normal a life as possible, reach for their potential and become valued, contributing members of society. The Presbyterian Church shared this important vision and an old abandoned school building was secured in the community of Evergreen, Louisiana, becoming Evergreen School. By 1980, Evergreen grew to serve almost 300 individuals and the name was changed to the Evergreen Developmental Center. The 1980s brought to Evergreen a shift to more community-based services. By 1993, more than 90 percent of the individuals were served in the community. Evergreen prides itself on providing the highest quality services and implementing the best atmosphere for individuals with disabilities to reach their fullest potential and become contributing members of society. Over time, Evergreen has grown into an organization that serves more than 1,160 individuals with disabilities in eight states, including Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida. Since 1992, Evergreen has worked with state and local authorities to move people with disabilities out of state and privately owned facilities, earning a reputation in the field as experts in transitioning individuals from institutional settings into community settings. Evergreen has continued its 60-year legacy and commitment to providing exceptional care for medical and behavioral needs, opportunities for meaningful employment, and independent and abundant life for the people we serve. Evergreen provides a wide variety of programs and services, including community homes, day programs, supportive living and employment services, cultural art centers, fitness and wellness programs, and social enterprise projects. 1) Community Homes - Evergreen provides services in typical home environments where six to eight people with developmental disabilities live. The program is designed to provide training and assistance to help people become as independent as possible. Evergreen staff are present in the home 24/7 and assist individuals with daily tasks such as meal preparation, personal hygiene, transportation to work, and medical appointments. 2) Day Program - Designed to meet the unique social, emotional, and educational needs of individuals with a wide range of disabilities. At the same time, each of our Day Programs provides a safe, secure, and stimulating environment where adults with disabilities can learn, grow, nurture relationships with their peers and actively participate in the community around them. 3) Cultural Arts Center - Everyone has something to share; their ideas, their joy, or their challenges. Art can provide individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities with a means to share. On a higher level, talented artists can earn money by selling their work in our online store and at art and community events. 4) Supported Employment - This program ensures all individuals who want to work have the opportunity to work towards achieving employment. We strive to assist people with disabilities to gain the ability to obtain real work for competitive wages. Evergreen’s staff members are trained as effective job coaches and provide assistance that facilitates the individual to thrive and be a productive contributor to the workforce. 5) Home and Community-Based Services – Evergreen provides a variety of service delivery options to help individuals living in their own homes or apartments. Evergreen also provides Supported Independent Living services, Respite services, Personal Care Attendant services, and more. 6) Vocational and Prevocational Training – Evergreen provides opportunities for people to develop work and functional life skills. Day services provide a place for individuals with all types of disabilities to be active, socialize with their peers, and receive needed health and personal care services. Evergreen strives to provide training and support for individuals served to find jobs in the community with competitive wages.
