Start The Adventure In Reading's mission is to improve the reading skills and self-esteem of lower elementary school students.
About This Cause
Almost 70% of Greater New Orleans area 3rd graders can't read on a 3rd grade level. They will not develop adequate reading skills without intervention. By 4th grade, students transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." Students must use their reading skills to understand subjects such as math, history, and science. By providing free one-on-one tutoring to these young students before they fall too far behind in school, STAIR gives them a solid foundation on which to build. Illiteracy is closely linked with high school dropout rates, crime, incarceration, increased poverty, and poor health. The outcome of providing early intervention is consistent for STAIR - an average increase in student performance by 98% and 2 reading levels. STAIR students are tutored twice weekly after school or on Saturday mornings, resulting in roughly 75-80 tutoring hours per student throughout the school year. Since 1985, STAIR has served more than 7,500 young students and their families across greater New Orleans. STAIR is led by a volunteer Board of Directors and Advisory Council, and is staffed by a small force of experienced non-profit and literacy administrators and over 300 trained volunteer tutors. Help STAIR increase the number of local students reaching the single most important milestone of early academic development- the ability to read on grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
