The vision of the Joyful Heart Foundation is a world free of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. Our mission is to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever.
About This Cause
When Mariska Hargitay began playing Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit more than seventeen years ago, the content of the scripts, as well as the research she did to prepare for the role, opened her eyes to the epidemics of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. But what really opened her eyes—and ultimately, her heart— were the thousands of letters and emails she received from survivors disclosing their stories of abuse, many for the first time. The fact that these people were revealing something so personal to someone they only knew as a character on television demonstrated to Mariska how desperate they were to be heard, believed, supported and healed. Her response was to create Joyful Heart. Mariska founded Joyful Heart in Kailua-Kona in 2004 with the intention of helping survivors heal and reclaim a sense of joy in their lives. Today, Joyful Heart is a national organization with hubs of service in Honolulu, Los Angeles and New York. Our mission is to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever. We deliver our mission through a program portfolio that includes the three integrated areas of Healing, Education and Advocacy. Joyful Heart is paving the way for innovative approaches to treating trauma, igniting shifts in the way the public views and responds to sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse, and reforming and advancing policies and legislation on the city, state and federal levels to ensure justice for survivors.
