Mission Statement
The PROP Shop of Eden Prairie is a nonprofit serving families in need in Eden Prairie and Chanhassen, MN. It provides free clothing, household goods, and furniture to low-income families or families in crisis. The PROP Shop's mission is to provide basic support for families in need through volunteers, community, and other organizations.
About This Cause
The PROP Shop accepts donations of gently used goods, including clothing, toys, furniture, and household items. These items are either given to low-income families in need or sold for a discounted price in the adjacent resale store. Thus, the PROP Shop utilizes the donations to the fullest potential: either giving them in direct assistance or using them to generate monies that will fund services. The PROP Shop has helped more than 1,880 families (more than 7,000 people) total in its first seven years. The PROP Shop is run primarily by volunteers and provides community service opportunities for civic organizations, businesses, faith-based organizations, adults, teens, and youth. The PROP Shop serves a unique role in the community helping members meet their basic needs for clothing, furniture, and household items. The PROP Shop’s programs give beds to families whose kids are sleeping on the floor and helps people transitioning from homelessness to furnish their apartments. Staff and volunteers work with school counselors to serve kids who need clothes and other supplies to succeed at school. The PROP Shop supplies basic needs to families who need a helping hand. Families thrive with just a little support. Many volunteer at the PROP Shop while receiving help or donate once they get back on their feet. The PROP Shop measures success by the number of times staff and volunteers see former clients who have achieved self-sufficiency and are now active citizens. They are giving back, working, and contributing to the community. With a referral, families may use the Family Services area once a month for necessary items and request furniture as needed. The PROP Shop currently serves more than 700 families each year, over 2,500 individuals, with clothing, household goods, and furniture. Since the PROP Shop opened, it has served over 1,880 families; over 2,500 adults and more than 4,500 kids. The PROP Shop programs include its Family Services area where families can find free clothing and household goods. It also operates a furniture program that provides free beds, dressers, couches, and kitchen tables and chairs to families in need. Families are put on a list for these items and matched with them as they are donated. In 2012, the PROP Shop held its first Coat Drive and served more than 200 families with over 600 coats for kids. In 2013, the PROP Shop gave over more than 650 coats. More than 630 kids have signed up for coats so far in 2014. The creation of the PROP Shop was a direct result of rapidly changing community demographics and a growing need for social services. The PROP Shop’s Board of Directors formed in 2006 and the PROP Shop opened its doors in April 2007. The PROP Shop saw a significant increase in the number of families visiting in early 2009 due to the economic crisis. The PROP Shop now serves 200 families on average each month and 700 different families each year. Since the PROP Shop opened, more than 1,900 people have volunteered and over 10,000 people have donated. The PROP Shop is grateful for the support of the community and appreciates the Eden Prairie Lioness’s commitment to the families of Eden Prairie.
