Mission Statement
Street School is a non-profit alternative education and counseling program that transforms lives by building healthy minds, creating opportunities, and preparing students for the future.
About This Cause
1 in 4 Oklahoma students, on average, leave school between ninth grade and graduation. The statistics for dropouts are bleak; 25% over age 25 live in poverty and 71% of inmates did not graduate from high-school. The vast majority of the youth who attend Street School face many personal challenges such as a history of domestic violence, abuse, trauma, and lack of family support. Many of the students that find their way to Street School are “at-risk" for substance abuse and other illegal behaviors. These challenges and other behaviors have become barriers to their success. The majority of students dropped out of high school prior to enrolling in Street School; many are involved in the legal system; approximately 28% are identified as chemically dependent during the initial assessment; and most report involvement in behaviors that put them at risk. Three out of four students do not have both parents in their household and have an income of less than $40,000 annually. Street School's goal is to reduce the high school-dropout rate and provide at-risk students the skills necessary to be college/career ready. Street School focuses on students who are committed not only to their education, but also to resolving substance-abuse problems, learning and practicing life skills and dealing with behavioral issues. Street School fills a void of support traditionally provided by family and provides an avenue for them to be successful. For over 50 years Street School has led and set the standards for Oklahoma in alternative education and is the model in which other programs follow. Our comprehensive and individualized services enable students to achieve their potential and become responsible and productive adults. Research confirms that programs like Street School that focus on, "smaller, more personalized learning environments; blocked schedules in which students spend more time with fewer teachers; in academies during the critical transition year of ninth grade; or in classes or academies with a career or career technical focus" are the most effective in preventing dropouts. This is consistent with the number one solution dropouts themselves identified -- making classroom learning more personalized, engaging and relevant prevents dropouts.
