Mission Statement
The mission of Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is to produce quality professional theatre in Oklahoma; to encourage and educate talented individuals; to promote collaboration among the arts in our community; and to enrich the quality of life for the people of Oklahoma.
About This Cause
Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is the state’s leading, professional theatre company employing thousands of actors, artists, directors, choreographers, musicians and teaching artists each and every year. Opening as a summer stock theatre in 1963, with the goal of producing world class musical theatre for the people of Oklahoma, Lyric has grown to become a dynamic organization producing year around on two stages, with education programs that reach thousands of youth throughout the state. Lyric has fostered the talents of thousands of actors and artists including Kristin Chenoweth, Kelli O’Hara, and Megan Mullally. In the early 2000s, Lyric Theatre claimed Oklahoma City’s historic Plaza District as its first permanent home by renovating the Plaza Theatre, a 1930s era movie theatre which had fallen into complete disrepair, in to a state-of-the-art live theatre venue. Lyric further advanced the placemaking of the re-emerging Plaza District by transforming a vintage Humpty Dumpty Supermarket in to a modern Production Arts Center containing: Lyric’s musical theatre academy for youth, fully equipped costume and prop shops, and three flexible rehearsal studios. Lyric’s move to the Plaza District became the chief catalyst for the complete revitalization of the Plaza business district which is now one of the most popular destinations in the state. A vibrant inter-city scene where all ages enjoy live theatre, festivals, shopping, public art, dining, and more throughout the year. Today, the theatre’s annual summer musical season is produced at the magnificent 2,477-seat Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall, and September through June’s programing is created at our 281-seat Plaza Theatre. A more intimate venue for musicals, plays, youth productions featuring Academy students, and creating new works. At the local, state and national levels, Lyric Theatre is a notable thought leader for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the arts. From the production titles chosen, to casting, to audiences served – Lyric’s programming is reflective of Oklahoma’s rich heritage and diverse communities. Accessibility is at the core of Lyric’s education programs, as well. Through the scores of scholarships offered which make musical theatre training accessible regardless of financial capabilities, the sensory-friendly performances which create a welcoming environment for children with sensory processing disorders such as autism, Asperger’s, and touring theatre for youth that reaches all corners of the state. Lyric partners with a diverse array of community organizers, projects, educators, and social groups to advance social justice, LGBTQIA pride, and the recognition of unsung heroes and heroines in our society. All of which advance Lyric’s artistic mission in our state. Lyric is committed to creating theatre that tells stories which foster community conversations and promote empathy for others; thereby, deepening Lyric’s focus on inclusion and diversity, both off and on the stage. Thousands of jobs have been created for artists in-residence, out-of-state artists, creative staff, business staff, and part-time employees.
