Mission Statement

To heal the trauma of childhood sexual abuse through therapy, education, and prevention.

About This Cause

Bethesda's mission is to heal the trauma of childhood sexual abuse through therapy, education, and prevention. Our goal is to provide exceptional, trauma-informed therapeutic services to all survivors of sexual childhood abuse in Oklahoma, while using community education to empower survivors to seek help and prevent future abuse. Core to our vision is a world where survivors and their families have a safe and empowering place to heal, regardless of financial restraints. As such, all of Bethesda's clinical and educational services are completely free and do not bill insurance. Bethesda's clinical program provides trauma-informed therapeutic services to children ages 3-18 with reported disclosures of sexual abuse, as well as non offending family members. Our programs center on incorporating healthy coping skills with emotional awareness, encouraging survivors to identify and react to their feelings in non-harmful ways. Early interventions seek to address the effects of PTSD and mitigate the long-term impacts of abuse. Our programs include group, individual, and family therapy sessions, as well as summer day camps. Each type of session emphasizes a different approach to the healing process, all coming back to the importance of healing and empowering survivors. Our clinical program also integrates proven techniques, such as art and play therapy. While building upon therapeutic approaches, specific treatment plans are developed for each client in order to best meet their individualized needs. Additionally, we offer therapeutic services for non-offending caregivers, which enables them to work through their own experiences with their child's abuse and teaches them how to model healthy healing and coping as an entire family. In FY2023, 338 childhood sexual abuse survivors and 215 non-offending caregivers received free therapeutic services from Bethesda's clinical program. However, we continue to have a steady stream of referrals and currently have a waitlist for new clients. Bethesda educates children in schools and community centers across Oklahoma through our Stop, Go & Tell program (SGT). This curriculum uses a strategic framework to give children and adults alike the knowledge, language, and confidence to identify and respond to potentially abusive behaviors, with the goal of ultimately reducing sexual abuse cases. Our educational team travels across the state, presenting educational programs at various school districts and community organizations. These lessons, often ranging from five to eight 30-minute lessons per grade, cover topics such as personal safety, boundary rules, and identifying safe adults to report boundary violations to. Tailored programs are also offered for adults, such as counselors and teachers, so they can be better prepared to address abuse in the populations they serve, and even put on their own educational programs. In our 2023, 30,516 Oklahomans across the state attended a Stop, Go & Tell presentation put on by our educational team. Additionally, we attend community programs and resource fairs to provide training for counselors, educators, and other community advocates about childhood sexual abuse prevention.
